I'd warrant that the word "past" would imply something from FFVIII as that game deals directly with the concept of time travel. It's the last line that is throwing me off: "untactful".. does that mean some form of spoiler?

How about Elixer from Mystic Quest? It was said to cure anyone. Plus it hidden away in a cave. Could be it, but probably not.

These hints relate to how the thing is found in the game, what it does, and how the characters react to it. Each of these lines are farily integral. Also, this thing isn't of really huge, earth-shattering significance (though some might disagree), and you can play the entire game without ever encountering it, or even being aware of its existence.

the father referring to Garland, and the girl referring to the planet itself..(Terra, its a girls name)
I believe Braska's sphere is the correct answer.

Ok I'm going to have a guess. The black Materia from FFVII? This is why I thought of that...
An item not easily found but long sought - Sephiroth was looking for it, and it is not easily found.
It can never be sold, borrowed, nor bought. You cant sell, borrow or buy the Black materia.
Once you find it, more of the plot will be unfurled. This is true, once you find the black materia alot of the plot unfolds.
And have both the father and his girl. You discover after this about Aeris's parents...
