The only problem with playing FFVII first is that no other game in the series is like it. With it's unique setting and materia system, you might be disappointed when you play a more traditional title such as IX. If you start with IV or a similar title, you can almost guarentee that you'll enjoy I, II...and pretty much the rest of the series.
