There are fanfics involving every possible combination and permutation of unlikely couplings...
In every FF, there are small groups of characters with an interesting story, one that'd make a great game all by itself.
FX has a lot of great possibilities - Kimahri and Yuna in the past, for instance, and the most popular suggestion - a prequel about Auron, Braska and Jecht on their pilgrimage. In fact, there was some speculation about that one being made into a game, but nothing came of it.
With FFVII, I'd love to see a prequel featuring (SPOILER)Zack, Sephiroth and Elmyra's husband, Shinra Corp, Lord Godo and their involvement in the war with Wutai. There's bound to be superb story in there, too.
So many prequels, so little chance of them being made... *sigh*
