Is there anything I need to be aware of prior to starting this game?

Some guy I knew said he missed/didn't-get/etc. the materia system and had to start over at the end of Disk 1. What do I need to know to not get stuck like that?!

That, and I'd also suggest you to read the tutorial parts. There are two of them in the game. One is in the inn of Sector 7 (Avalanche's base sector) and one is in Junon.
