What you do works for your board, what we do works for our board. I've adminned/staffed at dozens of boards and I can tell you now that each one of them has a different set of rules and each set of rules works for them. This site is large and successful, as you can probably see, and has been so for a long time - our rules obviously work well. If you do something like post porn accidentally, that's your problem, not ours. You should have checked what you were posting. Simple as that, really. But as I said, each site needs their own rules. I know some forums that are fairly large and don't ban people at all unless they've done something really bad. They don't even really warn them - they just make fun of them and stuff. It works well for them, but if we did that here, we'd probably have a lot of members screaming at us about how abusive and egotistical and whatnot we are. Well, we get that anyway, but it'd be a lot worse. You'll find that with a board of this size that has it's forum staffers in the same social ring / circle of friends as the rest of the members, you can't put a foot wrong or be even slightly inconsistent without all your friends (and other members) giving you a good tell-off for it. If we had one-week bans and one-month bans as well as permabans, then everyone would analyse every ban we make, and we'd have a lot of people demanding that we unban certain people sooner rather than later and saying "This person got this long a ban, while this person only got this long a ban, this is not right, we hate you" and stuff. Permanent bans also mean people don't get away with doing something because "I felt like it, and hey, I'm only going to get banned for a month anyway."
So yeah, there are so many reasons why we don't offer short-term bans.
Now, as for second accounts: Unauthorised second accounts do always get banned. I'm pretty sure one of the admins went and banned all the unauthorised ones such as repo man and Other quite some time ago, so yeah. The difference between a normal member making a second account and a banned member making a second account is once the second account is banned by us, one of them doesn't have a first account to go back to.
