hey, I never even noticed that... go e-mail Square-Enix and ask them yourself
They don't look all that similar, really... most of the resemblance comes from their way of talking. It's possible the translators noticed that they look a little bit alike, and decided to use Mr T's gruff yet heartfelt dialogue as a basis for Barret's lines.

I think it's just a coincidence... if one person can come up with a gruff black guy who talk like this foo then someone else eventually will.

They definatly look alike
I didn't see Mr. T with a gun in stead of his hand.
But yes they do look similair, at least to me. When I did the game the first time, I actually named my character BA, after Mr. T's character in the A-Team

1. Catlike creature. Has a large red ball on it's head attached by a long hair. Some can fly. Some can fight. Some are lazy bastards. All say Kupo (or Puu)
Biggest differenace between Barret and Mr. T are
Barret= Shoots his gun and hits everything
Mr. T = Shoots his gun,uzi,pistol,bazooka and anything else and hits nothing
that would be funny if they did that in the show like FF7 everytime they would miss a shot you would see miss by that bad guy.... you probably wouldn't be able to see anything dureing the shooting scenes because the whole screen would be full with miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss
