Out of everything on that list, "sphere grid" is the only thing that's really a levelling system...
Materia and items are to do with using abilities and magic, not levelling. FFVII, VIII and IX use EXP and AP to develop characters' levels and abilities.

However, I find the Materia system to be the best. It's well-integrated into the game's plot, it has a certain logic to it, and the whole "benefit/detriment" balance is a nice touch.

i,ve picked materia but why is there only 4 ff games in the list? ffV and ffVI have pretty good systerms too.

I enjoyed drawing ablilities from equipment. It made for an extra challenge to have to consider one last thing before hitting the Optimize button. No sarcasm!

I prefered IV's system, of learning things based on your character. I would have liked it to have more (like Kain being able to learn some new stuff) but I liked the challenge of every character being unique and different in their abilities, instead of the more recent games where, in the end, the only thing making the characters different from eachother are their limit breaks.

Agreed, but I like the fact that your not dependant on only ONE healer, too...in FF4 and 9, if your healer goes down, you're SCREWED unless you can pull some serious luck together.

I liked gaining experience for levels, and didn't care for when Chrono Cross and FFX got away from that.

I'm an outcast. ;_; I liked FFII's most. :upsidedow Swap a goblin = HP+, MP+, Endurance+, Magic+. Use Ethers after the battle. Next battle, Cure all the way.

Seeing as though I play FFVIII the most I am used to the junction system the more and I like it.
