Did you know that the color calico/tortiseshell (in cats) almost always occurs in females, and if it's in a male, he's almost always sterile.

It's because females are essentially chimeric. At a multi-cell stage in development, one of the X chromosomes in each cell always inactivates. However, in some cells the maternal X chromosome and in others the Y chromosome is inactivated. One of the colour genes in cats is found on the X chromosome - so if the maternal and paternal X chromosomes code for different colours - they will end up as a patchwork, depending on which area of fur is descended from a maternal X-inactivated or a paternal X-inactivated cell line. Since two X chromosomes are required for the calico/tortoiseshell phenotype - any male cats would have the have polysomal X chromosomes - such as XXY - usually resulting in infertility.
