I'll try to remember to laugh at my parents' funeral someday then.
If you could remember them with a smile, funny anecdotes... or laugh at your own misery at the time (or even now) - it would be admirable, and is liable to help you and bring others closer to you.

I don't mean to express contempt - simply to treat things with humour. Great people can do it while it happens, and others have to wait a while. Either way - it's a wonderful defence mechanism, as long as you don't become cynical, blunt or dull.

Whether a person who can laugh at tragedy is "great" or not is a matter of opinion, and in my opinion it's not so. Someone who can laugh at anything at any time, including other people's misery, is at the least rather shallow and at the most rather heartless. There are times for laughter and there are times when laughter is inappropriate.

Agreed. But I was talking about humour, rather. Not being able to apply humour to events in your life means your life will be a whole lot harder, and more boring as well. I didn't mean you should laugh your arse off at your mother's wedding or something... it's not denying your sadness. It's not necessarilly about laughing about later, either. It's just... a light-hearted, humorous approach to things.
