    Near Death Attacks

i just noticed this section in the FFVI part of this site. What are these nifty sounding attacks and what do you have to do to intitiate them. From the name it sounds like your character has to be near death? Is that all? I'm just curious becasue I've been playing this for 22+ hours and have never seen them. Am I just lucky/unlucky?

Yes, your character must be near death, i.e. crouching in battle because of low hit points. Then all you have to do is keep attacking over and over. When you attack when you are near death, you have a small chance of doing the near death attack instead of your regular attack, but the chances are slim so you'll have to try a lot.

Hehe, thanks! Not much to it. Guess I've just been "lucky" so far and not seen it. Course, I'm a catious player too...don't usually have characters down that low for very long. Maybe I'll experiment tonight......

I thank my actual FF 6-live to those near Death Attacks. I was never able to beat the second encouter with Ultros and I choose let me think Edgar, Cyan, Celes and Locke to go to the Opera. When I was up the stage and fell down. I always was killed by him. Then one day, he killed Cyan, he killed Locke. He very damaged Edgar. And suddenly I choose fight and he actually kills Ultros . I never ever saw a Near-Death-Attack after that, but I am very thankfull to it.

I've only seen one, ever. The odds of getting them aren't very good, not to mention that I don't keep my characters that weak.

I don't remember them even being that good, either. This isn't like FF8 where they are a major part of your strategy.

I got Locke's once in the Sealed Cave and Shadow's once on the Floating Continent. Neither was really needed, but it was kinda cool. I usually keep my HP really high though so it isn't a big thing for me.

The only one I've seen has been Terra's "Riot Blade", which actually saved me on the floating contient from a random encounter with a dragon.

I read somewhere that you have a 1/20 chance of getting one when the requisite conditions are met. I think 1/5 would be more appropritate, really.

    I've seen Celes's, Terra's, and Locke's

For some odd reason, Locke does his near death attack often when you're equipped with the HAWKEYE. Everytime he was weak he'd smash the crap out of enemies with it.
    Lamia's Tiara- Headgear in FFIX
Lamia's Flute- Weapon for Eiko in FFIX
    Lamia in FFV- a enemy
appearance: a lady with long brown hair, wearing a tiara...half woman and half snake.
    Lamia in FF3j- A Harp
    Lamia in FFL2- An enemy
FF2j Queen Lamia, at one point she even gets Frionel in a bedroom with her and jumps on the bed and says "take me!".. before she turns into her snakey self. She serves as a mini boss in this game (as Queen Lamia).. and after you fight her as a mini boss, regular lamia's become random foes and later on in the game, Queen Lamia's become random foes as well.
LamiaScl. an item that paralyzes foes.
According to legend, she was once a Libyan queen (or princess) who fell in love with Zeus. Zeus' jealous wife Hera deformed her into a monster and murdered their offspring. She also made Lamia unable to close her eyes, so that she couldn't find any rest from the obsessing image of her dead children. When Zeus saw what had be done to Lamia, he felt pity for her and gave his former lover a gift: she could remove her eyes, and then put them on again. This way, though sleepless, she could rest from her misfortune. Lamia envied other the other mothers and took her vengeance by stealing their children and devouring them.

Do they have the same chance of doing them. I've only seen two but I can't really remember who they were. I saw one of them twice and the other three times.

I was lvling up in the desert for hours, and I think that's where I got to see Mirager, which is Locke's.

Terra is like a goddess in my last game, so I have her fight Kefka alone. Having 1/30 or whatever the fraction is of her max HP is not dangerous at all. It's been a while, but I think I remember seeing hers. I haven't seen anyone else's.

With some weapons, like hawkeye or sniper, Locke gets a chance to use an alternate attack where he throws the weapons instead of slashing with them, but I don't think that's his near-death attack as he does it with full health too.

That's not his special attack. Just an extra bonus one that does more damage.
