I have to say that I never though of Hedigger as an important character (sorry DJzen) :sweatdrop .
But I also have to say that while not important, he was still well developed and really did his part of the story well.

Now, Heidegger's (SPOILER)death is never confirmed in the game. We know he was on board the Proud Clod when it was destroyed, but we don't know for sure that he and Scarlet perished. Shinra often has escape plans...

I disagree--at least Heidigger was considerate enough not to prance around with a crappy Mako Gun and slap his ass in a disturbing manner. Not to mention he wasn't stupid enough to actually try to fight Cloud and them and think he could win. (Except for aforementioned battle involving Scarlet, but Proud Clod was doing all the work so I'm ignoring that.)
