The heartless overtook the souls/hearts of normal people with even the purest of hearts (but as Ansem said, people with the purest of hearts have some type of darkness inside.). Until Sora had opened the door, they would be forever trapped in their heartless state. When Sora did, they'd be returned to their natural state and back to their normal worlds.
