He's not talking about stupidity. He's talking about being desperate. Desperate and stupidity are 2 different things. As the saying goes, desperate people do desperate things.
In a low-rate country, you'd almost do anything for money. If a poor dad stole bread knowing he would most likely be caught, does that make him stupid? No, it makes him desperate. I'm sure a lot of people have done "stupid" things in dire straights.

It's not really all that life threatening, I mean condoms are made to not
break. Their entire reason for being is to not break. Of course it happens,
but having it pass slowly through your digestive system is nothing for a
condom really...and even if it were to break there's still a good chance
that you'd survive it because someone would notice you convulsing on the
floor and you'd have your stomach pumped. This doesn't make them
morons. Maybe a bit greedy, but not morons. Would I do this? No. I'm not
a greedy person, and if I wanted to get drugs through airport security I'd
just wear briefs and crotch the drugs...it's pretty easy to do.

It's not easy to just go and find work. Most employers won't hire you if you can't even afford to take a bath or clean clothes. You can't just assume that all people that are poor are just lazy. And I never said all poor people steal, I was stating a specific example.
A few dollars to you could mean a few thousand in the minds of Columbians who often make a few dollars in a month. If they have a family to feed, they'll go to desperate situations to do so. What you think is "stupid" can be seen has courageous to some people, especially those willing to sacrifice their lives so that their family can live better for a month longer. I'm not saying the smuggler at the airport is doing it for his family, he might have other goals, but like I said: desperate != stupid.
