I really don't understand. We're talking about risking your life with a very good chance, whilst commiting a crime - for money.

If a poor dad stole bread knowing he would most likely be caught, does that make him stupid? No, it makes him desperate.
It makes him a criminal. Not all poor people steal. Some *gasp!* go find work, do anything LEGAL and SENSIBLE to earn money and live respectfully.

As for dire situations, yes, people often do crazy things. But doing stupid and crazy things that could seriously risk your lives for nothing more than money is just that - stupid.
