Regular Hard Drive and PS2

I'm really cheap, and i'd like to play FFXI on my PlaySation 2 instead of my PC somtimes. So i was wondering if i can just get like a regular hard drive 30-40 GB 7200 RPM, probably a Sony or a Maxtor. put some kind of mounts on it, figure out the jumper setting, and get a PS2 Network Adapater to hook it all up. Then I can get the HDD software and format it with the PS2's file system. Then could I install Final Fantasy XI for the PS2 onto the hard drive and play it like that? I don't wanna pay 100 bucks for the game and HDD then 40 more for a Network Adapter. I think about 40 bucks for a cheap 7200 RPM 40 GB HDD and then i can get a used Network Adapter from like EB or sumetin for about $25-30. Think it's possible or am i just better off NOT trying .

In theory, it could be possible, but then again do you really want to risk messing up your PS2? You'd have to open the thing up and hook all your gear things to their proprietary connections, then get your hands on the method to format to their file system (again, made by them for them, I'm sure they don't just hand that out). To top it off, how are you going to get the PS2 copy of the game without the HD and NIC adaptor? They come packaged all together. It would be more trouble than it's worth and you might wind up toasting your PS2 in the process.

I think the real question in my head, however, is why you would want to play on the PS2 when you have the option of playing on your PC? I know there's been several old threads buried around here discussing the benefits of PC vs. PS2 (and I'll admit that I'm strongly pro PC) so I won't get into the details about it, but needless to say the perfrmance and amount of system control on the PC is far superior.

I think it has to formatted a special way, and though I do know of tools (none by name, but I've seen them around) for formatting a drive like that, I've only heard of them working with modded PS2s. So I don't know.

Anyway, I don't think you can buy a copy of FFXI for PS2 without getting the bundle.

Precisely. Even if you DID have a mod machine and acquired a burnt copy of the game, you'd need a brand spankin new CD Key to play. Crackspider.net? Any other game-hack related sites? Good luck, not for this game.

Too much trouble to be worth it IMO. I'd just pay the money and get the game legit, it's totally worth it.

I pretty much have an answer to anything you asked, for getting my hands on the file system, that is the trickiset part and i don't have one real good solid answer but a few theories. The HDD utility disk lets you format the HDD. Now for getting my hands on the discs my friend has the copy of FFXI for PS2. when you install it on the PS2 if you have an account set up you just enter your information in, thus i don't need access codes, cause I have an account. My whole purpose for even considering the PS2 over PC is cause of Norton , it's so freakin annyoing for that to pop up. Other than that, thats...about it. I can run the game full settings and resolution with no lag, i run Athlon XP 2500, 333mhz FSB, 512mb DDR, Radeon 9600XT 128mb. I probably won't try it, but now i'll never be satisfied lol. thanks for your opinions they helped alot.
