Each year, up to 40 million Americans develop the flu, and about 150,000 are hospitalized. During past epidemics in the United States, influenza and its complications have caused between 10,000 and 40,000 deaths.
People over the age of 50 and those of all ages with chronic illnesses (such as diabetes, heart disease, asthma and HIV) are more likely to become seriously ill with the flu. These people are also more likely to go on to develop other serious infections such as pneumonia. If you are elderly or have a chronic disease, you should call your doctor at the first sign of flu symptoms. - http://www.igotflu.com/dangers.html
I work around old people so I'm supposed to have one every year, but I missed it this year. Doesn't seem like Canada has any shortage though because apparently a lot of Americans are coming here to get their shots.

Yeah, our health costs are pretty insane here. Most people, especially the elderly cannot afford it.
I didn't realize the flu had such an impact. Heck I've never had a flu shot in my life. Just read an article about my state (Illinois) seeking 62,000 doses from Europe. Crazy.

I got the flu shot this year. But then, I'm in the high risk category due to medical history. Yay me?
I (and my doctors) felt the need for me to get the vaccine because with my lack of immune system, if I so much as went in the same room as someone with the flu, I'd probably get it, and bad. I can't afford to miss time from work or other things, so I got the shot. Here's hoping it works.
Prior to my health issues arising several years back I had never gotten a flu shot, however.
President Bush himself has said that younger folk need not take it. Us young adults/teens can survive the flu in a day or two of constant restOriginally Posted by noname

Yeah, I agree with CSZ. I never had the flu or a flu shot in my life. I think it should be for old people only, because they need it most. All these paranoid mothers are making kids that don't even need them take them, when the old people need them.
Young children and elderly typically have weaker immune systems than young adults to middle aged. I remember as a child, that when I would catch the flu it was always a week or two of hell. Now, and in the last 10-15 years (I'm 25), the flu lasts at most a day. Infact I cannot really remember the last time I had a real bad case of it.
