They settled out of court for $2500 in total.

That's not a bad deal for settling out of court as that comes out to $3-$5 a CD.

I'm pretty sure that was because she was sharing them (making them available for others to download) and not because she just had them.

Over here it isn't illegal to download music.
It's just illegal to upload it.

Why does everyone thing music = mp3? There are a lot of other audio formats out there too.

I guess I have about 13000 audio files. about 9000 is mp3, perhaps 1000 or so in vorbis, and last, but not least, 3000 chiptunes :D!
Over the last year, I've bought quite a lot of albums too, so not all of them are illegal. Also about 2000 of the mp3's are legal to copy anyway.
It's kinda hard to check, seeing as I'm not on my own computer at the moment, but I can do an estimate. The average song length is about 4 minutes, because chiptunes are normally like 30 seconds to one minute, and I have several thousands of them :p.
