Yeah, but note: was Laguna aware of his son's existence?
And even if he was, he was in WinHill after the war and all, didn't he have amnesia?

Yes, Laguna was aware that he had a son, and knew Squall was it.
No, he did not have amnesia, and Squall's birth came after that anyway. He was wounded rather severely when he came to Winhill, where he met Raine, eventually married her, and she gave birth to Squall when Laguna was away trying to save Ellone.

LOL - you could say that.
When the war was over, Laguna intended to return to Raine, but the Estharians were in a state of civil disorder and looked to him for leadership. He felt that he couldn't just walk away (to use a really bad example, its kinda like Iraq - just because a tyrant is removed from power doesn't mean everything turns all hunky dory, and again, that's a really bad example since that situation is much more complicated, I'm not getting into it, etc.)
So Laguna sent Ellone home to Winhill with the intention to follow when things got wrapped up. He didn't realize that Raine had died giving birth to Squall (its possible at that point he didn't even realize Raine was pregnant, we don't know). With Raine gone, the Winhill villagers sent Ellone to the same orphanage they had sent Raine's baby - Edea's, and we kow the rest.

All this information got to Laguna at some point in the 17 years between Squall's birth and his meeting Laguna in Esthar, probably through Ward and Kiros. Laguna obviously felt bad about screwing up and kept dips on what his son was up to. It's apparent from the game he wanted to tell Squall the truth about his parternage, but felt that the whole "we need to save the world right now" thing made the timing inappropriate. We can only assume Laguna told Squall at some point after the game, unless he wimped out, which is also exceedingly possible.

we know that laguna knows who his son is, for sure.

Go talk to him when he's on the ragnarok and you've discussed all the plans already: "Squall I've got something to tell you when this is all over, you might not want to hear it though, but that's okay, I understand."
