On my first playthrough, I kept the official names. On my second playthrough...

Barret-Barret
Tifa-Tifa
Then I got the idea to change names.
Aeris-Dummy
Red XIII-Beast
Cid-Mean
Yuffie-Wimp
Vincent-Werewolf

First time

Cloud=Mario
Barret=Mallow
Tifa=Danielle (girl I liked)
Aeris=Peach
RedXIII (forgot)

Then I kept getting stuck at the Chocobo ranch

Then I came up with the idea of personalizing it, and it's a good thing I did.

Cloud=[myself](always since the second time I started a new game)
Barret=[dominant classmates, different names depending on if I was playing in grade school, high school, or college, but this last time I'm naming him after my lit teacher]
Tifa=[my only female acquaintance at the time, but I was mad when I found out she was the better romance, so since then I've named her after the girl I was in love with. Danielle, then later it was Mika, and now finally I am playing through with her as Alicia, which I think is the perfect name, heheheheheh)
Aeris=[first it was Danielle, but after my 2nd time when I knew she, um, wasn't going to be a romance anymore, I wasn't sure what to do with her. One time I called her Danielle2, then I named her Danielle when Tifa was Mika, but now she's Mika b/c Tifa is Alicia. I think I finally figured out the perfect names for Tifa and Aeris. Mika is my tragic romance, and Alicia is a romance and also a childhood friend.]
RedXIII=Mario[my dog, but this last time I decided to change it to a Japanese professor at my university (whose name amusingly sounds like Nanaki)]
Yuffie=[various classmates, again depending on my current saga in life.]
Cait Sith=[again, random classmates not so dominant. When I get there this time, I'm going to name him after Dave, who you can find on the list of officers on my web site]
Vincent=[again various classmates. This time I might name him after my math teacher.]
Cid=[again various classmates. This time I will name him after the president of the HCSA, which is what my website is about. Only fitting b/c they have similar personalities.]

Incorporating yourself into FFVII makes the story more enjoyable. I was freaking out in the Temple of the Ancients when 'I' started acting strange. And I like the game playing matchmaker with me, hooking me up with girls I like in real life

Yeah, I know. Reading "Nanaki is Nanaki" when you enter Cosmo Canyon for the first time is sort of funny, though.

I regretted what I called mine when I played FFVII for the first time. >_<

Cloud was "Amthermus", the online nick of a "kinda" ex-bf/thing of mine... Tifa was "Missy", his nickname for me. XD And I called Red XIII "KoRn", because I kinda liked the band at the time. Crazy. The next time I called them their proper names, much better. =)

*I named it red cuz i didn't want the XII and i didn't want to name an animal after my friend.

**I ran out of friends that were girls so i kept it the same.

I usually keep them the same, but after finishing the game for the first time I tried something and was thinking that I was a genius (which wasn't true) and named Cloud as Sephiroth, even though I've already beaten the game, playing it like this gave me a headache and the scenario became really creepy!
