The best characters for me are Storm and Psylocke. Psylocke's psychic daggers (the ones that she throws) does so much damage and pretty much annahilates any non-psychic resistant enemy in the room. Storm's chain lightning does the same and makes fighting the last boss a breeze.

Wolverine, Storm and Rogue. I've never played any games, read any comics or watched the cartoons, but I loved the films. Cyclops is cool to though. BTW I have no idea how to spell some of the names, other than storm.
