Thread: Could Sega be successful in the Rpg or adventure game market

Default Could Sega be successful in the Rpg or adventure game market

Since it looks like sega will struggle to compete in the sports game market from here on out (as nfl games are rather vital in order to compete) do you think it would be probable to turn to the other popular genre (rpg's and adventure games).

As good as they seemed to make their sports games I think they could very well make the switch (as i think sports games critics are probably a little harsher than rpg critics are).

Is it more difficult to make good rpg's or adventure games than it is good sports games. Would it be difficult for them to jump into another genre and be a success at it.

I think Saga is doomed. They had a golden age, and now its over, and like the titanic I belive it will flounder.

Sega will dominate the Adventure and RPG trades as long as they keep Sonic, Phantasy Star, and Shining Force series alive.

I agree with Joel if Sega can pull off making a good 3D Sonic, more Phantasy Star, and the new Shining games suceed (Shining Tears. Shinig Force (working title)) I love the Shining games I loved playing Legacy of the Great Intention (Resurresction of the Dark Dragon on GBA) on my Sega Smash Pack II.

Eh. I think they're done. I'm going to killed because of this, but I really don't like Sonic, Shining Force, or Phantasy Star. Blegh. They're not my kind of RPGs, but I know that plenty of people live them...maybe they have a small chance of keeping themselves alive, but I doubt it, unless they do something drastic. *shrug*

I'd say that Sega has to actually put some EFFORT into the next Sonic game. They really need to learn how to make a camera that works, and find the perfect balance between the old 2D gameplay style and the Sonic Adventure titles. Sega has made good RPGs in the past--Skies of Arcadia was a great game. They can survive, but only if they stop making crappy sequels.

To make a good quality RPG is much harder than to make any sports game. With sports most of the facts are alrady there. You start from basically scratch when you make an RPG. I don't like the fighting syle in Shining Force games but I did make an exception for FF Tactics. I lurve that game.

While the last few Sonic games haven't compared to the originals in terms of fun, I've yet to play a Phantasy Star games I didn't like. I think it's a series that can definitely hold its own, and a good marketing campaign is all that's needed to make the next Phantasy Star game sell. After seeing a trailer for Phantasy Star Universe a while back, my jaw hit the floor - too bad it's an MMO.

Additionally, they have potential in the Panzer Dragoon, Guilty Gear, and especially Virtua Fighter series, to name a few.

Sonic Team is full of talented developers. Sega has always just needed to work on the actual business part, I think.

Sonic Team needs to step it up when it comes to Phantasy Star. I'm sick and tired of their bull.

The bull I'm referring to is that each and every entry in the Phantasy Star Online series has been hacked so bad its become unplayable. I'm not getting a very good impression of Sonic Team when I see them not putting forth an effort to stop this. They're the ones in charge. They should do something, or as a last ditch effort make it a server side. When people hack your game and make it unplayable, it speaks worlds about how you hold yourself as a company.

I haven't played Socom II in quite some time, but last time I played I was impressed with how Sony was actually doing something to combat the cheating. Why can't Sonic Team at least put a little effort into something like this? GMs maybe? Not even?

To hell with Battletoads and Double Dragon.
    THIS is the ultimate team.

Well, hmmm if anyone could try an RPG and succeed, Sega could. (havent they already?)

I believe that Sega no longer exists as a stand alone company these days... they were bought out in like ?August? by Sammy. (ya know, that Pachinko company XD) Sega still makes games... but now Sonic is on Pachinko machines in Japan (T_T Sonic has become a casino b!tch)
Its not effecting Sega much, more than a few layoffs and a cancelled game here and there, but it still seems sad that Sega is no longer their own company.
On the bright side, when I was in Japan in August... one of the Sega buildings (the one i saw anyway) was still up and running full speed. ^_^

Not only have games been canceled and people canned but the greats are starting to leave now. I do believe Mr. Virtua Fighter left and I know Rez left. I was really pissed because they smashed Smile Bit together with Sonci Team(they suck). I love smile bit games. Best part of Sega ever...even if it was a short run.

When I was younger, in my house, we used to have a Super Nintendo and a Megadrive. I could only ever have one set up at a time because of the one television in my room. In general, I prefered the Megadrive.

Although these days, I'm very much a GameCube > Playstation 2 > X-Box person, I still consider Sega as a company very capable of producing quality games, for their own consoles (Megadrive and Dreamcast in particular) or others (the Gamecube, for example).

As Joel pointed out in his post, Sega have a number of games series (serii?) that have been very enjoyable in the past. Now, while I openly admit, I much prefer the 2D Sonic games to the 3D ones (though the 3D ones were quite fun, just not to the same extent), Sega are quite capable of producing even now.

I'm not sure if it was made by Sega or not, I believe it was however, but Shenmue was a very enjoyable adventure game on the Dreamcast, and I'm still disappointed that I've never been able to play the sequel after I enjoyed the original so much.
Not my words Carol, the words of Top Gear magazine.

Space Channel 5 was not Sonic Team...that was Rez(UGA) and that man has left Sega.
