    Default Best British Football team

My friend reckons it's late 70's Liverpool, I think it's Man United late 90's...

I feel inclined to agree with you gokufusionss1. The Liverpool of that era were dominant in Europe and that is an accolade the Man Utd team of the 90's didn't win. Of course their accomplishments have been great, the 90's Utd side won the European Cup once, a handful of league titles, the F.A Cup etc but they never dominated Europe like Liverpool did. Between 1973 and 1984 Liverpool won the European Cup 4 times, the league title 8 times, the F.A cup once, the League Cup (and it meant something back then) 4 years in a row, the charity shield 5 times and shared it once, the UEFA Cup twice, the European Super Cup once, even the reserve team got in on the action winning the reserve title 9 times in that 11 year period. So in 11 years the Liverpool first team of that era won 25 trophies and totally dominated English and European football in a way which Man Utd haven't quite been able to do. If you take the same period of time, 11 years, from when Man Utd became successful again, 1993, they equal Liverpool for league titles, scoring 8, 3 F.A Cup wins, 1 European Cup and 1 European Super Cup and 5 charity shield victories. 18 trophies for Man Utd making the Liverpool team of the 1970's and 80's (bearing in mind my time period did not include Liverpool doing the double in 1986) statistically the better side.

    Also we had Keegan!

I am inlclined to agree with you in many ways, but I can't remember the Liverpool 70's/80's teams (because I wasn't born until the 80's), but Manchester United's success was in my era. Also the treble in 1999 is in my opinion the single greatest season any team in English football has ever had.

And I'm a United supporter, so that tipped the scales!

Not to be picky, but Liverpool won a great treble 1983/84 season, and another great treble in the 2000/01 season. I don't remember much about the Liverpool team of the 70's/80's either. Born in 1981, my first memory of LFC is watching us lose to Wimbledon 1-0 in the 1988 F.A Cup Final. But history doesn't lie. The achievements of the Liverpool team in the 70's and 80's are yet to be matched, and the achievements of Liverpool of all time, again, are yet to be matched. It's a shame we can't go away to Bolton these days and pick up three points.

Liverpool were great. But i believe in this time its far harder to win stuff, much harder to dominate Europe, and almost impossible to do *THE* Treble. Which is why the 1999 year will always be the greatest achievment for me.

That Said, i thought Arsenal were Awesome last year, and on ther day, truely unbeatable. At their best, i think Arsenal of last season would have beaten any side(at least of this generation).

I have to go with my team, which is Liverpool. As Doc said The team from that era not only dominated English football but Europe as well. Apart from '99 Man U were at best average in Europe.

Plus i'd rather shoot myself in the foot than vote for Man Utd.

I don't really think you can say Man Utd have been average in Europe, they have reached the knockout stages consitantly over the past 10 years. Only Juventus can boast a similar record. But saying that, they've never dominated Europe like Liverpool did.

You say that, but in the last 10 years Real Madrid have won the Champions League 3 times and have all but dominated Spanish football, taking four titles in that time period in is what is arguably the toughest league in the world. I wouldn't say Man Utd have been average in Europe at all, they have been consistent but not good enough. With the exception of 1999, they struggle to compete on all fronts consistently. I'd like to reiterate again that Liverpool won a treble in 2001, ok it didn't include the league title but I don't think it's harder to win things now at all. You're either good enough to go all the way, or you aren't. A.C Milan are good enough, Barcelona are good enough and Chelsea are good enough to win their domestic leagues and the European Cup this year but Utd's dominance of English football effectively ended after that impressive treble. Arsenal and Chelsea have since established themselves as contenders for the Premier League.

The only team that really comes close to matching Liverpool's European dominance of days gone by is Real Madrid, but now even they look like falling off the treacherous train of success.

Real are the Kings of Europe really. I belive they've won the European Cup/ Champions League 9 times in total. No other team even comes close to that.

But ever since Real Madrid last won the Champions League (2000 I think) they've been <img src=http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif><img src=http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif><img src=http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif><img src=http://forums.eyesonff.com/images/smilies/rpg_009.gif>e in Europe.

By the way, I don't know why I bothered putting the other teams in this poll, Liverpool 70's/80's vs Man Utd 90's/00's would have been sufficent.
