Yargh, my game keeps crashing!

Each time I beat the giant machina at Djose, during the conversation about how Paine has been gradually opening up, when Rikku walks over to Yuna, the game freezes. I've tried three times, with a PS2 controller, a PS1 controller, and once without a memory card in the slot, and it keeps happenning.

I haven't used a gameshark or done anything like that, but I just can't get past that point.

Is my copy of the game simply defective or is this a common bug?

this is what i did when my FF9 disk 2 broke. iborrowed my friends disk and if that doesnt work try it on his playstation. if none of your buddys have FFx-2 youre boned!
