2005 NFL Draft Hype Thread

Yes, I know we have 3 months until that day, but my mind is just exploding with all the information, so I'm going to go ahead and make the thread for those losers who want to get into the whole mock draft thing. I look for this to be a defensive-dominated first round, as you can all tell. *nod*

This is my second draft. *nod*

Pick: QB Alex Smith, Utah
Though they're desperately in love with Leinart, I don't think they're willing to wait another year. I remember the days when #1 picks didn't have to be QBs. Actually, I don't. Smith is a smart, accurate quarterback with running ability. Though he doesn't have a great arm, he's an efficient QB similar to Tom Brady.

Pick: HB Cedric Benson, Texas
Seems almost too coincidental. However, Benson is nothing like Williams was. They're offense was set up for a power back, so Benson will fit. With excellent size and grinding style, and underestimated speed, Benson is the best overall back in the draft.

Pick: CB Antrel Rolle, Miami
If Leinart had come out, they would have probably picked Smith with this spot, but they'll be happy with Rolle, a cover corner in the mold of McAlister and Bailey. He could be the best overall player in the draft.

Pick: WR Mike Williams, USC
Chicago is in desperate need of recievers after losing Marcus Robinson and Marty Booker over the past 3 or 4 seasons. Though you could see D'brickashaw Ferguson or Alex Barron also taken, I'd put money on Williams, a guy with unbelievable size and hands, with too much upside to pass on.

Pick: OT D'brickashaw Ferguson, Virginia
Griese had a lot of problems staying out of pressure this season, so Ferguson is a fit here. He's got great speed for a tackle, going against some of the better defensive ends in the league.

Pick: OT Alex Barron, Florida State
It's rare that you see two offensive tackles taken with top 10 picks, but you'll see it here. Barron isn't as fast as Ferguson, but has great mechanics and is extremely physical. Fills a need for the Titans.

Pick: HB Ronnie Brown, Auburn
Aaron Rodgers could very easily go here, too. Oakland wants to get that whole "smashmouth, I'm a pirate" thing goin', so Brown is a great fit with that. At 6-1 225, he's got size, but he runs a 4.45 40-yard-dash, giving him a great combination of speed and size.

Pick: LB Derrick Johnson, Texas
How many people can name me a Cardinals linebacker? I think that says enough.

Pick: OT Jammal Brown, Oklahoma
The Redskins' offensive line has always been their main concern, and this situation is no different. Not much else to say.

Pick: QB Aaron Rodgers, California
A surprise pick, as of now. From what I hear from the Detroit media, the Lions look ready to give up on Harrington, so Rodgers will get the next shot. He's a great all-around QB, better than Harrington.

Pick: CB Adam Jones, West Virginia
My first draft didn't include "Pac-Man," a junior. He's got great speed and athleticism, and will help the Cowboys secondary a lot.

Pick: WR Braylon Edwards, Michigan
This pick is a bit too good for the other CBs in the draft, even if that's what San Diego wants. However, they do need a downfield playmaker to go along with Gates and Tomlinson, and Edwards will make that trio one of the most feared in the league.

Pick: DT Rodrique Wright, Texas
The Texans are already high on Wright, a big guy who would anchor their D-line for years to come.

Pick: CB Marlin Jackson, Michigan
Not that the Panthers need a lot of secondary help, but they do need some. So they'll take the best player available at this point, except for Cadillac Williams, but the Panthers are plentiful on running backs.

Pick: CB Carlos Rogers, Auburn
An excellent cover corner for a defense that badly needs them. Maybe KC will get a clue and realize that they need help on defense.

Pick: LB Shawne Merriman, Maryland
I think just about everybody has Merriman going to the Saints, who badly need linebackers. Merriman, a big guy, can also play defensive end.

Pick: S Thomas Davis, Georgia
The Bengals need some help defensively, and the secondary, especially. Davis is most similar to Sean Taylor, or Roy Williams, though not as good. He's still a fierce hitter and a untiring competitor and could give life to a struggling unit.

Pick: LB Ahmad Brooks, Virginia
A junior, Brooks is a big, physical, run-stopping linebacker with the physical tools to make an impact on a defense that lacked any, err....anything.

Pick: CB Bryant McFadden, Florida State
Once again, we have a defensive player. The Rams need help on offense, and so I took a shot with McFadden.

Pick: DE Mathias Kiwanuka, Boston College
Wiley will likely be cut, leaving a hole at DE. Kiwanuka has got the physical tools at 6'8", and underestimated speed.

Pick: LB Darryl Blackstock
Cadillac Williams is slipping, slipping, slipping....but unfortunately there's nobody with a need at running back there to take him. So we have the Jags taking Blackstock, a teammate of Ahmad Brooks, to fill the gaping holes they have at each of the outside spots.

Pick: WR Troy Williamson, South Carolina
Speed, speed, speed. Williamson's got plenty of it. The Ravens need it on offense. So here we go.

Pick: HB Carnell Williams, Auburn
I anticipate the Seahawks franchising Hasselbeck instead of Alexander, so the Seahawks will have a need for a HB. Williams has underestimated power, and excellent playmaking skills.

Pick: LB Channing Crowder, Florida
Yes, this is a stretch pick. While Webster remains available, they have a need more at safety than at corner. They're set on Harris and Carroll at the corner spots. So they'll do something random and take Crowder, a redshirt sophomore.

Pick: DE Erasmus James, LSU
The loss of Bert Berry left a whole at RE, so the Broncos will take James, a fearless pass rusher.

Pick: DE Marcus Spears, LSU
And still, the ONSLAUGHT of defenders continues. >.< But that's what this draft is here for. John Abraham looks on the way out, and so Spears looks on his way in.

And I can't do anything else now. Though I expect 3 more D-backs to go before this round is finished (Shazor, Webster, Miller), to Atlanta, San Diego, and Indianapolis, most likely respectively. I told you this was dominated by defensive players, because they happen to be bette rthis year.

Anyway, now that I've done my draft, post your own! You don't have be as detailed as I have been, with the icons and everything, or the descriptions. You can even just say who your team is looking at right now.

I don't follow college, but I do agree that the Raiders are taking a running back.

The Niners had better take Alex Barron, because Tim Rattay sure as hell wasn't the problem this year.
