I don't think they're a good thing, but I don't know if they've "changed" anything. You can find famous orators all the way back through history. Look at Antony in Julius Caesar (first and last time I ever reference Shakespeare *shudder*). People are more easily swayed by charisma or emotional babble than by truth sometimes.
