Have you changed the button-config ??? Because that might be the problem. If so, try doing it with the standard button configuration. It might do the trick.

what for ffvii, i hate the default controls for it but the gameplay and the story is by far the best,don't fret look in the manual for how to change the controls

its happened on my second time through aswell very strange

i had the same problem when i was playing it again, but idid change my buttons -> when i did, i couldn't unlock anything else: ie. i couldn't select stables for my chocobo's, couldn't unlock huge materia in rocket and so on Then i switched the button-config back to default and it worked again.
