    Default Racist Radio song?

I got this from a mass e-mail from Nemesis Records, the recording company of one of my favourite singers, Kristine Sa. You see, it's an asian recording company, so they were especially offended by this song. I'm really appalled at the fact that people could be so insensitive. I'll post the e-mail below. I edited out some unecessary parts:

    ___________________________

It's not everyday that there is a need for a call to arms, but as you may have already heard, young Asians need to show that we will not tolerate being disrespected in the media.

On Friday January 21st 2005, New York Hip Hop station Hot 97 (WQHT) aired a racist and offensive skit based on the song "We Are The World" called "The Tsunami Song". In it we are referred to as "screaming chinks" being washed away by a 20 foot wave. Here are the lyrics:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------
There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your whole country away

And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks
And no one was saved from the wave
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away
You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches swim.'

    [Chorus]
So now you're screwed, it's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your ass away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
And now your children will be sold to child slavery
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2 DJs who recorded the skit, Miss Jones and Todd Lynn repeatedly played the song after callers complained about it's insensitivity and blatant racism. When another DJ on the show (Miss Info - who is Asian and comments regularly on VH1s "Best Week Ever") opposed the song, she was verbally abused on the air by both Miss Jones and Todd Lynn. Todd Lynn actually said "I'm gonna start shooting Asians". Since that broadcast, neither Miss Jones nor her staff have apologized on their own behalf (the station issued a half a$$ed statement of apology click here to read it).

You're gonna start shooting Asians huh? We can shoot too! But why resort to guns when you can hit them where it really hurts - The station's pockets. Instead of a bullet, shoot off your anger at the FCC and demand they be reprimanded and FINED for every broadcast of that skit. If the FCC gets enough complaints, it could fine them in excess of $100,000.00 (the maximum fine for indecency times the number of times they broadcasted the "Tsunami Song"). Remember the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction"? The FCC acted on thousands of indecency complaints and CBS was fined half a million dollars. Howard Stern has paid a very heavy price to the FCC for his indecencies as well based on numerous complaints. A hundred thousand dollar fine would REALLY hurt a single radio station.

If you are angry about this issue, instead of talking about it and complaining amongst ourselves, vent to the FCC. Let our anger be felt as a whole and unified community. Media personalities think they can disrespect us as a race without impunity and so far, they're right. This kind of thing will continue unless we let everyone know we will not lay down and take it. We cannot allow anyone to disrespect the hundreds of thousands of people who have died in the Tsunami tragedy and we cannot allow them to disrespect us as Asians.

Here is the email address of the FCC to file your complaint (be sure to include all of the information below in your email in addition to your comments): fccinfo@fcc.gov

The broadcast in question: "The Tsunami Song"
Date aired: Morning of January 21st 2005 (multiple airings)
Station call letters: WQHT-New York (Hot 97)
Offending DJs: Miss Jones and Todd Lynn
    Offending lyrics:
    ---------------------------------------
There was a time, when the sun was shining bright
So I went down to the beach to catch me a tan
Then the next thing I knew, a wave 20 feet high
Came and washed your whole country away

And all at once, you can hear the screaming chinks
And no one was saved from the wave
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away
You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches swim.'

    [Chorus]
So now you're screwed, it's the tsunami,
You better run and kiss your a$$ away, go find your mommy
I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head
And now your children will be sold to child slavery
    ------------------------------------------

Only if the FCC gets THOUSANDS of complaints will they act. This is one surefire way to show the entire media community that we are not the invisible minority to be dissed and laughed at. The time to apologize has come and gone. It is time to PAY.

    Sincerely,
    Minh-Dan Pham

I'm not asian, but that song is horribly racist, so I e-mailed and complained. It's easy, just copy what they say to copy and paste it into the e-mail. If you could e-mail too, it'd be very nice.

That's despicable. I however, won't complain to the FCC because I don't think the FCC should have the power to fine any station for saying anything. In fact, I don't think that they should even exist, but that's besides the point. The REAL way for the people to show thier power is to boycot the station. A mass boycot would ruin them. It should work too, because im sure that most people will be just as offended about this as I am, if not more.

I highly doubt a boycott would last for more than a day. There are too many indifferent people out there, not to mention the racists. I'm sure that there are also insensitive jerkfaces that found that song KICKIN' RAD. :rolleyes2

Hm... that sounds a lot like racism to me. Looks like we have the next Johnny Rebel in our midst.

The DJs involved were not white, as far as I know, so they CAN'T be racist!

Yeah I agree, as long as your arnt white and making racist remarks your not racist!

Anyways, I happen to be half Filipino, and if I ever met them in real life, I would punch them in the face. Maybe I should make a song on how blacks in Africa dont use condoms and each other and have childeren they cannot support. But of course I wont get down low life as they're.

I can't believe the song was ever aired.

    Absolute stupidity.

I'm pretty shocked that things like this even made it to air. Station managers typically have the foresight to put a stop to things like that. I could understand if it was allowed to be aired the first time, because radio is live, but on multiple occasions?

    That's absolutely horrifying.

PS: The FCC exists primarily to enforce obscenity laws, and I think it's necessary. People shouldn't be allowed to get on Nickelodeon at noon (when my five year old cousins are watching TV before lunch) strip naked, snort coke and murder their parents ritualistically kthx. I think the FCC can be very harsh in somecases, but in others I do believe they do what's necessary to prevent idiocy. In short, it's like everything else; you have freedom as long as it doesn't effect someone else's freedom or happiness.

    Signature by rubah. I think.

Nick's cable, it's not regulated. It's just that the most of the basic nonsubscription-based cable channels don't have the balls to cross any lines, the television system works without the FCC.

That song was aired by Hot 99.7 in New York by the DJ Miss Jones and Miss Info(or something like that)__ they are both black AFAIK. They have an apology on their webpage: www.hot997.com A lot of people asked for them to be fired(over 2/3's according to a CNN poll), I'm not sure if I agree with that.

I just think they should be fined a heavy amount(like $50000) and suspend them for a few weeks. Obviously racism should never be aired, but the fact that this went on for a whole week shows how some people never learn.

When Rodney Marsh of Sky Sports made a 'light-hearted' joke about the Tsunami, he was immediately sacked by the company. That song is far worse than Marsh's joke, so at the very least the same should apply here. Some things are inappropriate, those lyrics are downright tasteless.

Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if I were as great as Paulo Wanchope.

Yeah, and their attitude after was bad too. I dunno how anyone could think that song is funny.

What the hell? It frigging well is so still racist. A racist comment is a racist comment. It doesn't matter who says it. Ugh. It boggles my mind why anyone would say it's only one race that can be racist. Saying that is racist.
