Porn in forums

Hey guys, lets not trash FG too much, here. I am ambivalent about the place, but since we have a lot of people who are members both here and there... don't insult the general membership. Thanks.

Porn forums would suggest a lack of maturity in the board's members, and are therefore a sign that you probably won't get much decent discussion.

Why is that, please? I think my other online home is still pretty mature. Sure, we have our joking moments of idiocy, but overall the serious topics stay serious, even though *gasp!* we have a porn forum.

I don't think the presence of porn in and of itself is any more immature than the presence of anything else sexual. By which I mean, it's not the subject matter but those discussing it that would make it either be mature or immature.

People in general are way too uptight about anything related to the s-word. Just calm down. It's a part of life, it's not doing anything to hurt anyone by existing (excluding cases of abuse, which I don't count as sexual so much as just criminal), if you don't like it, don't expose yourself to it.

Anyway, in my opinion, a porn forum can work in a few forums. Mostly in a forum like The Basement, where everyone is mature about it, and the discussion is mostly about love, relationship, and whatnot relating to the subject. As for other forums, those mostly based around gaming and such, a porn forum just wouldn't fit.

Also, it depends on the environment of the forums. A forum like EoFF, a porn forum would not work, because a) EoFF is about Final Fantasy, first and foremost. b) There are many members who are underaged. c) It just wouldn't work with how the staff operates here.

Anyway, contrary to what some people here are saying, we're not calling porn "the root of all evil." We're saying it has its place - at adult MBs. Not gaming/discussion MBs.

Is porn really that difficult to get these days? Well, I guess you could discuss it, like we discuss FF here, even though I have no desire to read those discussions. I'm of the conservative branch that thinks sex should be kept private and not freely talked about.

My internet home, SomethingAwful, had a porn forum until very recently. It didn't degrade much of anything.

I think thats because people expect a certain level when they visit SA and by its own reputation its hard to degrade. I'm not saying the members are crap but the way SA works it gives off a certain image because thats how it wants to be viewed.

It definitley lowers my opinion of the MB. The only exception seems to be The Basement, where, oddly, it seems to fit. But otherwise, no. Honestly---it's really not necessary. There are tons of other places to get it; it's easy enough to obtain. It seems as though most of the MBs with a porn forum have very immature members. From my experience, at least.

Don't really see how wanting to share porn on a forum is any more immature than sharing info, pictures, and other types of media on a regular message board. Every forum has its share of immature people; yes, my fellow EoFFers, this includes EoFF. I frequent a site that has a seperate forum for everything(including porn, but the admin. has to grant you special access to that area) and people, for the most part, remain mature and never talk about porn outside of the "special" forum. I know SA has a porn forum and regardless of how goofy those guys can be, they know when to be mature.

Anyway, pr0n forum. Nice idea on paper, sounds great. You can post and look at pr0n on the same site. But in practice? You can find both MBs and Pr0n sites on the same darned internets. Big Whoop.

A lot of guys are horndogs. People would be looking at the pr0n and not even posting, because they'd be too busy. You know what I mean.

So, Like others: Pr0n = bad idea.

As has been said, The Basement is made up of mature people. I'm guessing that's not by chance, and immaturity is... punished. Maybe it has just attracted the right people though, I dunno.

At a (hypothetical, of course) board where immaturity is not only tolerated but rewarded and made into inside jokes that NEVER EVER DIE (hypothetical inside jokes, of course), a porn forum would be a disaster waiting to happen. And, even then, I would say it lowers my opinion of The Basement, as well. I haven't been there though, so if it's tasteful and has artistic value and that sort of thing, you have my apologies.

Not that I'm opposed to porn, really, I just don't equate the places it is found with "good places to hang around."


Or just say "there is a time and a place for everything, and this is neither" and be done with it.

There are many ways to find stuff like porn, and it'd just be out of place in most forums. I've never been to The Basement, either, but judging from what I've seen and read here, I can see where such a forum could exist there.

One big difference, I'd imagine, is that a place like The Basement is more adult-oriented than (and I hate to add to the dogpile, but I know that's what this is about) Fool's Gold. Here at Eyes on Final Fantasy, too, our material is geared at least partially to a younger audience, a gaming generation, and that's why most people come here. A porn forum would be completely out of place in this kind of environment.

Do I think a porn forum would be bad? No. The overall membership is what would determine how badly the MB would deteriorate, not the content, as Daryl has mentioned. On the other hand, a porn forum here? No. It just wouldn't fit.

I agree completely. By no means does the presence of a porn forum make the members immature, and since I know a few of The Basement's participants from this place, it's obviously been handled with maturity by those who post in it.

What I mean to say is that as a non-member, my first impression of a board with a porn forum would be that there'd be more than a few immature members on there. A quick browse of the other boards might prove me wrong, and in that case I wouldn't hesitate to join. That said, that first impression alone might be enough to put me off any further browsing, so it would have had a negative impact just by being there, no matter how intelligently handled it might have been.

But you're right, of course. Porn isn't always handled immaturely, so my previous comment was a bit of a generalisation. No offence intended.

Though I am personally against porn, I must say that I am not against the right sites having a porn board. For example a site on sexuality and sexual health may benifit from such a board. However a board about cooking or a board about gaming should not have one.
