Well, I liked Kuja and FF9 as a whole but...the characterization for the villians, especially Kuja, just wasn't there to full effect. He was just a terrifyin', pissed-off metrosexual (like this guy at my school O.o). FFVIII was so terrible. You had...er...A bunch of 16-year-old children trying to find themselves...like the OC, perhaps?
FFVIII Thoughts:
Well...here ya go, you have a solitary, secluded, lonely-for-decent-reason teenage male who has just discovered the one eyed snake. He is the main character, named after a bird just b/c his parents hated him (Laguna/???). Probably why he was in an orphanage? The pieces fit. So then, you have the whole cast knowing each other randomly for no good purpose since childhood (same orphanage). "OMFG, Sis! Seifer's making fun o' meh!" >.>
Rinoa is his undeveloped (characterization-wise) female role. She has enigmatic powers and is linked to villians that once again, have little detail and serve as place holders (like the FFIX crystals).
Zell is a punk-rock wannabe who thinks he can pull off some kung-fu.
Selphie is obviously a little girl who was cared about SO much that shes hooked on speed and Squall.
Quistis is an ugly nerdy teacher who is trying to recreate the rape teacher/student case in the FF world with her little Squally. Boobjob included.
Seifer is another one who says "Everything about me must be BIG!" >.> Was that supposed to be dramatic? Or just queer? I wouldnt know.
The only enjoyable character is Irvine, because he breaks up the feigned romance between Rinoa (is that also a type of bird?)...by using a pornographic magazine rofl...
The main plot is supposed to have a love theme and center?? Xenogears' Elly/Fei connection makes them look like 1st graders on a playground, no?
The rest is filled with cliches and boredom. Personally, I think that the FFVIII fanfiction "Crimson Lies" on RPGfan.com is much better than the actual game!
Thanks Squeeny for ruining a good amount of time and resource. I had to force myself to get to the last disk, but then I forgot that you need to be lvl 70+ to actually defeat the final bosses!? >.> So, is the ending there for laughs or is it actually okay...?
I hate FFVIII.
As for FFX? It was somewhat good, the plot was interesting enough but was flawed in some aspects. It always gave me a tingly feeling inside, it was very fresh, new, grandiose, the world was unique and epic, there were so many side areas...It really fleshes out, and it was worth it. Tidus is quite a whiny detraction from the golden experience though. FFX-2 is pure fan service, btw...if you haven't noticed.
FFXI is an average MMO, really. It was kind of a timefiller. It would have been perfect for me but...it takes too much lvling time to actually get to the missions/quests. The battle is repetitive enough to hurt when you are as powerful as I was.
I have a 42DRK/21WAR combination, rank 5. It was enjoyable until it started to go stale. I got sick of lvling nonstop waiting to do the next missions...so I eventually dropped.
I have mixed views on most of the newer FFs as you can fathom. I have a tremendous fondness to FFVII, and this is definately the best story (which is the most important aspect) of the bunch that I have played. Yes, Cloud and Sephiroth are both somewhat trite but their backgrounds, their stories! make up for their glaring flaws.
I hear some ppl consider FFVI/III the ultimate RPG? Im going to buy it and see ASAP, along with Chrono Trigger. Im borrowing KH from a friend pretty soon, too. Ill wait and see if these top the other games SE has came up with in their lifetime.

FFXII, from what I've seen, heard, and read, will be quite an addition to the FF universe, maybe topping my list of FFs...Im just hoping they dont flop with the story. The two character thing just means that they will have the most focus, its not like the other ones just disappear. It might be like the Suikoden III system, perhaps, yes/no? That wouldn't be bad at all. The thing with the polygons will actually be an improvement. Look at the snapshots, for God's sake! They are friggin' amazing! Much better than FFX/XI/X-2...and most everything else in this gaming generation.
Nobuo is not having much involvement though, on the topic of sound. He is composing the main theme, and maybe a few others, but that is all. What do you think of that?! Im a little upset...bring in Mitsuda!? j/k (he is awesome though)

7 is my favourite but 8 wasnt all that bad if nobuo uematsu could be in that form, Tetsuya Nomura make the chars a lot less annoying chars and differ from ppl like Zidane and Tidus but dont make them too cold like Cloud/Squall more char evolution the level up system and ATB system return and well have a great game also involve side quests including the return of weapons eg ruby sapphire diamond emerald Ultima and Omega

8 was a great game but it had its donwfalls like all ff games but some of them really tick us off "the man are sick"

No, no, no. FFVII? Save the princess? FFVI? SAVE THE PRINCESS?! I don't think so. To summarize it in a more benign, accepting way is to say that the stories are formatted to be liked by all gamers; by the general audience and the game scholars. So therefore they won't be as complex and such. FFVII and under were not mainstream therefore they could be as offense and deep and adult as possible. Xeno isnt mainstream, so it can do that too and get away with it. Thats my little theory. This genre of RPG, the story-heavy RPG, is much like a book, ya know? That means its coming into existance will be similar...

Wow, you're so deep and mature. I can see why you wouldn't like an immature game that centers around teenagers.

This topic has gotten so derailed I can't figure out how it went from point A to point B. I'll do my best to comment on the original topic though.

Low polygon count, eh? Should be interesting. If they texture map it well enough it'll still look great, but it sorta makes you wonder what they're planning. I'm not thrilled to hear it'll just be about the two lead characters, but I'll wait and play it before jumping to conclusions.
