    Default Fantasy Baseball 2005

Pitchers and catchers report for spring training today, so that means baseball season is almost upon us! We've got plenty of time to discuss the league this year. I would like to commish it this year, and I think we should set a goal of 12 teams. Once yahoo starts registration I'll make the league and distribute the password, etc.

Any suggestions for changes is stat categories? I know I'd like to ax fielding percentage.

    So would I!

Let's see if you guys realize how I always win and plan accordingly. First hint: if your main concern is yourself winning, you're going to lose.

I'll provide more hints as the season progresses.

At least I am confident that, as commisioner, my rival will do everything he thinks he can.

Perhaps, the goal would be not to win, as much as tie you Del, counter move for move to stay on an even stance as long as possible?

As for stat changes... I can't quite recall all the stats we had last year, did we have doubles and triples?

    Take care all.

The good thing about baseball is that most of it occurs during the summer, where there is no school or any responsibilities at all. While I'm still technically deciding with myself whether to give baseball a try, pencil me in this season. Go Rangers!

I would love to give it another try, I suppose. Not sure if I really do want to do it again though.

    I am just... that ace!

It would be funny if everybody was obligated, though. Tell an admin to do so.

seriously though, please only join the league if you really plan to participate for the full season. It gets pretty frustrating if half the league stops playing after a couple months.

If you don't think you are going to be interested for the whole season, don't play. I don't need champ leeching off your team in the later months, even though it never matters.

and I don't need you trading Derreck Lee to Del in the first week either.

Lee might have a down year without Sosa or Alou to protect him in the lineup.

That bit of advice was free, folks. Now it's up to you to tell whether I'm being sincere or going for misdirection.

Lesson number two: Don't trust anyone.

I'm on the fence about leaving fielding percentages in or out because it does require us to draft at least some adequate fielders, which is very much a part of the real game.

I've noticed a pattern about how you draft pitchers Del, in that you tend to shy away from starters to begin the season. Once you've seen more or less how a particular pitcher looks, I believe beginning of May is a good gauge, you start to target certain ones. Drafting a good many closers and middle relief can also enhance your ERA to begin the season, I'd imagine.

    Take care all.

the problem with fielding percentage is that while it measures fielding skill at a rough level, it isn't always accurate at a more minute level. especially considering how close fielding percentage standings are in a fantasy league, it doesn't seem fair to reward extra points to someone for having a .001 better fielding percentage when that .001 really doesn't mean that team is any better at fielding.

Counting putouts and assists at least penalizes for the use of DH and rewards using players at their real positions. The problem is it overvalues 1st basemen, but I guess it can't be perfect.

Good point Eest. Okay, you've convinced me.
