NK's got Nukes

So , North Korea admitted to having a nuclear weapons program earlier last week ...How is the Bush Adminstration's top brass going to respond to this when they're ( presumably ) considering engaging Iran over her nuclear weapons programme ? And especially within months of the G8 summit , the BA obviously has a lot to handle ...

Any thoughts on this new development ?

Well, North Korea said long ago that it'd develop nuclear weapons if it was threatened by foreign superpowers such as the US. For quite some time, Bush has been saying, "Do what we say or we'll invade YOUR country next", so this development can hardly be seen as a surprise - or as unprovoked.

The widespread development of nuclear weapons is a frightening possibility, but not nearly as frightening as a world where only the US has a nuclear arsenal.

True - who are the US to say only THEY should have nukes ? That would mean total military supremacy over the world. It's totally ridiculous , considering that out of the 12 powers that are known to have nukes , only 5 of them are bound by the START1 and START2 treaties - thank the Lord for the UN or it'd be WW3.

It's an alarming thing. Particularly since I'm situated in a much higher risk zone from an attack from Korea than either of you guys. But, the population isn't so dense up here, and the most they could hope for on a strike here would be the obliteration of about 250,000 civilians and 2 fairly large... military.. uh, bases. OK, so perhaps it's not such a bad idea to strike here after all. Our ready squadrons could easily retaliate directly against N. Korea so perhaps they could view us as a threat.

yeah and you know that whole missle defense base thing they've been developing up here? yeah. a bust. though, to be fair, it's extremely difficult to hit an ICBM which is only about 6 feet in diameter (I think) and travels at about mach 4. Especially head on with another missle that travels at mach 6. tricky tricky. But still, it's a bust. Reagan's advisors had some pretty good ideas with satelite based infrared weapons. But, they're too vulnerable. Russia blew one up very easily.

the US is still the sole remaining superpower, but china's catching up pretty fast. I think perhaps the superpower status of the US might have spurred on the joining of forces of most of the Eurpoean countries. I mean, one country in and of themselves can't challenge us, but a whole buncha them together?

The fact that Nort Korea has nukes means that the United States will probably not invade North Korea now. The only way to beat a country with nukes is to use nukes against them. No one is going to stand for that. I know that I, for one, will not.

Dear lord I hope they don't go to war with North Korea. If they wanted to they could probably Nuke Seattle, I think we're close enough for them to fire one off at us.

Well the USA has 3000+ nukes, enough to destroy the whole world 300+ times. Also, in the next 10 years or so planning to cut down to 1700+. The U.S. doesnt even have the power to even produce a nuke, the only nuclear superpower too (that doesnt include bunker buster bombs).Source was from Channel One, a news station that comes on in the mornings in Highschool, here.

That damn program is so biased, its not very reliable to get your information from them. If you get it from USA today or CNN, i might believe you.

North Korea main concern is hoping to become noticed it todays world, not so much as to causing nuclear war, as most people think. They have constantly said that they will launch nuclear weapons, they say they have nuclear weapons, and even if the was a concern for nations, dont you think they would retaliate a little better than sending a few diplomates to take care of the problem? Its more about getting noticed that having an actual nuclear holocaust on our hands.

I heard a quote, one of you guys might have it in your sigs, something like:

nukes = big club. bigger club = able to demand more beneficial trade agreements = more money. more money = top government officials happy, poor folks on the bottom still starving to death.

N. Korea's leadership likes to bill the country as Paradise on Earth. They try very hard to keep the starving masses quiet and outta the news.

Eh so what? They want economical trade, so we dont give it to them just because they are communist...? From what i studied, we also try to clean sweep the homeless here quite often as well...

EDIT: Can think of only one reason why US doesnt wanna trade...to make N Korea stronger. And they use the communist thing to say they wont. From what i see N Korea should threaten, i mean they are just looking out for their own country then. Just like how US wanted to bomb the Middle East.

North Korea will be safe from US aggression unless they become Islamic. Despite protestations to the contrary by US officials, I'm fairly sure that the US is indeed waging a war on Islam. Afghanistan, Iraq - I'll wager Iran is next, or perhaps Syria. We won't mess with Russia or North Korea. We won't target the Latin American terrorist organizations. We'll leave most of Africa alone as well. I don't think Bush's use of the word "Crusade" in his State of the Union last term was the accident or coincidence that it was made out to be. I really just wish North korea and South korea would become one again
I just want to go there sometime when its safe and everything isn't chaotic.
