North Korea will not directly attack the US with nuclear weapons. If they did, the huge distance across the Pacific Ocean would provide plenty of time to detect an ICBM and shoot it out of the sky.

What they could do, however, is attack our lesser defended allies or assets, like South Korea, or maybe the Aleutian Islands.

However, I have complete faith that if North Korea uses nuclear weapons, that the US will not retaliate with our own nukes.

uhm, pardon for pointing out the obvious, but an ICBM would go over or near the Pole, not across the ocean. Much shorter distance for the missle to travel. That's why they've been building the missle defense sites here in Alaska; in the hopes that they can hit a missle going mach 2 with another missle going mach 5. rather a silly idea but the best that's there at present.

I doubt that they would be stupid enough to use it with The self proclaimed "Shariff of the World" in office.

Yeah thats the thing, would they, tiny N Korea REALLY launch nukes? The chances of them doing that is like...sooooo slim. =/ As someone said they wanted attention for trade so that they can operate their trade routes and boost their economy to be a better country. Of course USA will not let a communist labeled country to do that and instead point terrorism which in fact NKorea is RIGHT(yes right) to threaten in order to get their message accross. No one else is going to listen otherwise, this is a smart move on their part to get trade in which they need to boost their economy. After all, didnt the USA wreck havoc there in the Korean War and seperated both of them in the first place to weaken Korea as a whole?? >_>

Exactly my point. NK doesn't have the gonads to launch a nuke at us, and even if they did, it would get shot down rather quickly. That's why they'll use it on SK if they ever do feel like bringing the fury of the majority of the world upon them.

actually, all the tests they've run so far have failed.

I'm not exactly sure how big an ICBM is, but let's for point of argument say it's about 2 meters in diameter and about 10 meters long. I'm fairly sure they travel at about Mach 2 or 3. The interceptor missles they're using to combat them are much smaller and travel at about Mach 5.

The difficulty arises in trying to hit a 2 meter space head on at a speed of about Mach 10 from 300 miles away. They're just using the physics of 2 objects traveling that fast to obliterate each other as opposed to creating a big explosion to destroy the ICBM in the rather slim chance the explosion sets off the warhead.

It's just too fast, too far and too small a target.
