I agree that the formerly field needs to be filled out more often. It's very confusing when you leave a forum for a long period of time and come back to find out that half the people have changed their names. Of course, this wouldn't be a problem if people just stopped changing their name. I have rarely seen a time when a person's new name is better than their original.
