My dad used to make me fast for one week a month when I was living with him.
Of course, I was allowed to drink water; and for breakfast I had to eat an onslaught of coloured pills.
It was supposed to be good for my health, but it made me feel like **** most of the time.

fasting isn't hard as people make it sound. im muslim and we do it without water. not to brag but if you concentrate on why you are doing it and not the eating then you will get through it fine.
it's a truly humbling experience
OLT don't chew gum when your stomach is empty, the abundace of saliva will just make your stomach feel hungrier than it actually is.
Good Luck

Eyes So Sad
Angra Mainyu puts it perfectly. Also, chewing gum on an empty stomach is bad for you as it creates more stomach acid without the food for it to act on, which can give rise to ulcers. Id doubt it'd harm you as a one off, but meh.
After your fast, take a moment to ponder on how cleansed you feel for not having eaten for 24 hours. It will feel great. Apparently going on more ambitious fasts is a very fulfilling experience too.
