Default Relations between China and Taiwan.

As China is rapidly emerging as a world superpower , it's beginning to unite with it's " Little Dragons " - it got back Hong Kong in 1997 , now it's fast heading for the reunification of Taiwan. However Taiwanese separatists with links to the old Kuomintang Nationalists seem determined to stop Taiwan from becoming another asset under the CCP's rule.

Can anyone tell me how events are unfolding ????

I like how you put it as asset when it was obvious that Taiwan was rebelling from China and the USA wanted to weaken a country by dividing it and advocating "freedom" for them. I dont know whats going on, but for all i know, i hope Taiwan goes back to where its suppose to, China despite having the communist name on them, are not even close to that extremity at all, in fact its more capitalistic than you think. Why not name themselves as a capitalistic country? Think of what US can say and do when they do for not following what they want. I think US needs a kick in the rear a bit, they gone far too long without any check and balance on them.

I thought it was back at the turn of China communism and the old leader *forgot his name* Fled to Tawain, escaping Mao,and declaired Tawain the real China. Themn for a while in the Security Consuel Tawain had a veto, then they gave it back to China in the 70's. Doesn't Tawain want a referendum, and China says that if there is one, they wil attack. Then, the US said if they attack Tawain, they would attack China. So if there is a referendum in Tawain, there is probably going to be a world war. So I would say, I think everything is staying at Status Quo for now.

I know several Taiwanese. Better people in the whole world, you'll never find. Though, they don't refer to themselves as Taiwanese. They call themselves Chinese people from Taiwan. They're a married couple, and she was the daughter of an ambassador, and he was a rather highly placed lawyer.

According to Tom (the former Lawyer) the Premier in charge of Taiwan at the time (this was 4 years ago and I don't know if anything's changed) preferred the time during WW II when Japan controlled Taiwan. The Japanese commited many attrocities, as they also did in Korea, Manchuria, Indonesia, all over the place, and so Tom seemed to prefer the protection of China over the protection of Japan. He was all for Taiwan becoming part of China again. There was another person there at the time from Canton, called Chin. He didn't seem to care one way or the other.

Tom may have been biased, though, because he was a small child during WWII so he probably has some rather disturbing memories of Japanese occupation. He says that people that call themselves Taiwanese are young radical groups. Another person I know who calls herself Taiwanese is all for maintaining the independence of Taiwan from China.

My parents are from Taiwan, so that makes me Taiwanese by blood (though I was born in America). Anyway, I'm not totally clear about what's going on behinds the scenes and all, but I'd rather have Taiwan stay where it is. Taiwan has a different government, and even money system than China, so it'll be a big hassle to change all that. Plus, I like Taiwan the way it is now, so I'm not really all for changing anything. This is just how I see it from a kind of non-political standpoint.
