It's hard to say what the highest number the game can actually calculate for HP is, but the highest theoretically possible number is 999, and you'll never ever get anywhere near that, even at level 50. Especially if that character is a Black Mage.

Enemies, however, could possibly technically have a max HP of 9999. I'll have to give Chaos some mad high stats or something and see what happens.
On a side note, in FFII's original version, 9999 is NOT the max HP. If you exceed 9999 it goes into hex values, so you'll see 9999/A971 or something after you win the battle. Interesting, eh? It's entirely possible that the same could be done in FFI, they were programmed by the same guy after all.
Out of boredom I've decided it'd be fun to try to play the game as near "perfection" as possible- every item, max level, max hp etc. After I finish FF, I'll move on to FF2, etc.
So! hence my plight in trying to figure out the maximum and if its possible to attain it. Getting max HP in FF2 would be interesting, to say the least.
No it wouldn't. It'd be excessively tedious. Your eyes would start bleeding LONG before you did it.
I think for FF2...9999 is enough
For FFII, 5000 HP is plenty. 9999 is excessive.
