Does the answer have anything to do with money?
The man and his children (and others, I guess) were playing Monopoly. The man was using the car as his place-holder-thingy. He moved the car onto a 'street' which was owned by one of his children, and he ran out of money while paying her for the stay he had to have at the hotel, thus losing everything.
