It's hard to say that the USSR was leftist, because of Stalin's and Kruschev's totalitarian reigns. The only thing it really had was the equally-distributed poverty aspect of communism.

It was somehow leftinst in economy, only not liberal at all. Even though being left is generally asociated with being liberal, this does not mean you are, there has never been a far left country with a liberal goverment. For example, my current goverment is liberal center-left.

But I wouldn't consider myself a rabid conservative. For one thing, I'm not a religious nutso - I'm a devout atheist. I also support gay rights - to an extent. I'd consider myself as moderate, but leaning to the right.

Yes, I am indeed referring to the USSR. There has been no real threat to the US since. To US interests, maybe, but not the US as an entity.

contrary to the observation mentioned in the first post, being conservative or right wing will draw fire onto oneself a lot faster than anything else in these forums as well as in my university. Though, Colleges and Universities are traditionally more left wing.

There are some very negative right-opposed statements made just in this thread so far. I'm not referring to the domination on Capital Hill that the conservatives hold now, nor any of the facts mentioned, just the tenor and side comments made.

The problem is that both sides serve the same prupose, that is configuring a system on how society should work. And since both ways of doing it are not compatible, conflict occurs.

If everyone just "got along," then we would all have to agree with eachother. And if we all agreed with eachother, there wouldn't be any conflict. And without conflict, there would be no change, and we would become stagnant.

I know that people do stupid things.. but i can survive and get along with people with certain opposite beliefs, i even find myself getting along with the occasional evangelist, the problem is im just acting, and i know they are too. There will never be solid ground for the two to walk on... its been going on since before the civil war.. heck even before america was free from england. Thats why we made democracy.. so atleast we had a somewhat peaceful way of sorting out the issues.

No matter what you say it wont change someones mind, they have to see it for themselves...
