One word in the english language can have many different, subtle meanings. Maybe it's simply the particular meanings that you're looking at?

I don't see those two words as complete opposites, like, say 'upright' and 'slacking' would be.

I like the fact that he is intriguing, mysterious, yet believable. I just think he is a generally all-around well developed and design character. I also like how he is connected to some of the other characters in the game.

What's his connection with Yuffie? If you have him in your party when you first meet her, he comments on her shuriken and says that he's seen her somewhere before...Hmmmmmm...Also, I had this this way to prove how old Vincent should be, while at the same time proving how old Sephiroth was. When I dig it out, I'll post it on here, and you can tell me what you think. Bearing in mind my Maths isn't great...

Didn't know he had a connection with Yuffie. Maybe he just means hes noticed her while you were travelling. He shouldn't have been able to see Yuffie before because he's been in stasis in his coffin for 30 years, therefore Yuffie was born, and grew up while he was still inside there. The only way he could have seen her is if he saw her while he was travelling with you.

Maybe...I did read an interesting theory that used that source as a basis for saying that Vincent's hometown was Wutai.

Well, I know this isn't a very good basis for anything, but Vincent certainly looks like he could be from Wutai. Even if he was though, he couldn't have seen Yuffie because he was still in his coffin at the time of her birth, right up until Cloud gets him out of it.

This is certainly true. There is the chance, of course, that he may have seen her mother or another Female relative had he been from Wutai.

Mention is made of Yuffie's mother in the game, is it not? About how Shinra killed her during the Wutai War? Maybe the Turks were there helping fight/espionage/dirty work in Wutai at this time. He could of possibly been around her mother in some way. Or, hey, maybe.....

Her mother wasn't mentioned at any point. That Shin-Ra had her killed during the Wutai War is the stuff of FanFiction. In any event, it had been about thirty years since Vincent was killed and then revived through anatomic reconstruction. Yuffie was 16 years old. He would have still been out of the picture for 14 years, so even had Shin-Ra assassinated Yuffie's mother, Vincent would have had nothing to do with it.

It could also do with her shuriken only... afterall to some adults many teens look similar(not that I am saying vincent is shallow)... but vincent may have seen her shuriken... perhaps it is a weapon that is ancestrial in Wutai, and perhaps it is only used by female warriors. etc.

Perhaps the shuriken was Yuffie's mothers and Vincent had seen or know her mother when her mother was young, this I believe is the most likely although many possibilities spring to mind.

It was going on at least fifteen years before the main events of the game, as Elmyra's husband was off fighting in the war when she discovered Aerith and Ifalna after their escape from Shin-Ra. It's not said when it ended, though.
