It just occured to me that a large majority of the sprites in the classic FFs actually dont bother to keep their eyes on the prize (i.e. the monsters). they sorta peep at you through the screen. More often than not they're the mages classes. That might account for the fact that they get hit more often, mainly because they're not paying attention.

It symbolizes the great human-beast relations that Phantasmists/Summoners carry on. The Illusionists/Conjurers have one coming out the back of their heads, as well.

This would be an interesting point, but maybe it's because the way the "camera" views the center of the screen and not directly on them, that you see more of their face. Kinda like reality...?
If that was the case then it means meelers are looking slightly off to the right. Plus the formation of monsters would be in a strange kinda diagonal shape of sorts.
