Try the Black Mage Village or Burmecia. If you can't find them it might be too late to get them, but it shouldn't be yet.

    What's the money trick?

Have you ever wished you could live in Gaia?
Immerse yourself in "FFIX- Crystal World" a new rp site that goes beyond the eight main characters and focuses on what was happening elsewhere in Gaia during the rise and fall of Kuja.
Site opened recently. Original characters still available

Is it ever too late? Once you have the airship, you can do it whenever you want. You can get everything you need from Dali and Black Mage Village (at least you can on disc 4.. I'm actually not sure on disc 3).

Also, since you can only exploit it to it's full extent very late in the game, I don't think it's really cheating.

    I liked that too, Kishi.

Maybe he stapled it to his head so it wouldn't fall off.

No - the steepled hat trick is NOT cheating.....it's essential in building up your gil stash in a lv 1 ozma challenge - which I am still trying.
