I'm currently on my third playthrough of this game. I have never finished it, but I was forced to start over again because of my icky memory card that is forever lost.

Anyway, you know that wolf in Figaro castle? Is it better to release it or not to release it? And what difference does it make?

Lone Wolf, you mean? I don't think you can release him, but he does play an important role later in the game.

You can't release him. But watch out for Lone Wolf closely!

there is a part where you can release lone wolf, but it has no bearing on the game what-so-ever.

Hmm, it's possible to release him or not? Maybe I'm mixing up games or something. Well, I know there's a wolf in either FF5 or FF6 that can be released and that I don't know the consquences of.

if you release the wolf from prison in FFV he takes the flame whip or something from the treasure chest in the cave with the skull eaters.

There's some way you can get the Gold Hairpin that Lone Wolf steals in the house in Narshe, but I don't remember exactly.

You cannot release Lone Wolf in VI. He gets out on his own.

Later, you'll go into Narshe and the man with the treasure house (far right of the map) will say Lone Wolf has been spotted and ask if his treasures are safe. Go to the house, Lone Wolf will be there. Chase him all the way up the mountain and you'll find he has a moogle for a hostage. Stand still, the moogle will get up and both will be thrown in an opposite direction. If you save Lone Wolf, he'll give you the Gold Hairpin and run off never to be seen again. If you save Mog the moogle, he'll join your team.

edit: that's right, Lone Wolf gets out when Figaro castle gets stuck underground.

Im pretty sure you can get him in the World of Ruin even if you dont in the World of Balance, but then you cant get his Water Rondo dance. Gold Hairpins are pretty numerous in the game, so it's best to get Mog.

The rest of the thieves get out when the castle gets stuck in the World of Ruin. Lone Wolf just escapes (no one seems to notice) in the World of Balance, right around the time you get the airship.
