    Default excalibur in DoS FFI

okay, i get to the mermaid village, kick gilgamesh's butt, but i can never get the sword he's speaking of. if it is the excalibur (or whatever it is) how do i get it?

The evil Mermaid, Zaischel, guards the Excalibur Treasure Chest. She's behind a secret on the right side.

Or it's possible that somebody in the dwarf cave will make it for you.

Of course, I never played DoS, so I'm probably making all this up.

You get it just like you do in every other version of the game. Get the Adamantite in the Sky Castle and take it to Smith the dwarf. Gilgamesh's whole "I found/am looking for Excalibur!" thing is just part of his character.

i understand you mean well, but i don't think this helps. why? A) the shrines in DoS are just bonus grounds now, the fiends are in different places. and B) i've torn mermaid village apart looking for anything and everything to help. there's something there' i'm missing i just don't know what. let me go back and check it out.

Getting the Excalibur has nothing to do with the Soul of Chaos dungeons (or the mermaid village, for that matter). The adamantite is still in the Sky Castle, a compulsory dungeon that you go through later in the game.

Apparently you've been misled. The Soul of Chaos dungeons are completely new and weren't present in any previous version of the game. Lich, Marilith, Kraken, and Tiamat are still in the same places they've always been.

I've already told you that the Adamantite is in the Sky Castle. The mermaid village is not the Sky Castle.

The Lifespring Grotto, the "chaos water dungeon", was not present in the original game. Have you been to the Sunken Shrine? That's where the Item you need (Rosetta Stone, or Slab if you prefer the original name) is located.

on the first floor of the Sunken Shrine, go the stairs on the right side not the left. once you get it, go talk to that delusional idiot Dr. Unne in melmond.

You should just read Dr. Unne's walkthrough. It should still completely apply for DoS, except that it doesn't have the new dungeons.
    Sig under construction.

i'll be damned. this was all my fault. not only was i looking for the rosetta stone in the wrong place, but i also got the excalibur..... and i already had the ragnarok, which(suprisingly)is actually stronger than the excalibur. man do i feel stupid now.
anyways, as of last night when i found all this stuff out i actually went on to beat the game. thanks for the help, and thanks for putting up with my stupidity.

The Atma sword is really the strongest in the game.

To clarify for any other readers:

In the Sea Shrine go to the right on the first floor and there is a staircase leading to upper levels. On the top-most floor the Slab/Rosetta stone is found. Take that to Dr. Unne in Melmond to learn Lefeinish. Go to Lefien to get the chime which lets you into the mirage tower. In the top half, known as the Sky Castle, you find the Adamant. Take that to the smith in the dwarf village and you get Excalibur.

In the water grotto there is a sword called the Excalipur. It is a very crappy knock off of the Excalibur sword found in FFV. To get it go through the Water Grotto once. You will fight Gilgamesh on the way through and only get the Gengji Gloves. After completing your first run through go through it again. The door leading to Gilgamesh will be locked. You will find him in the cave-like area off to the right of the same floor. After defeating him you will see a sword laying on the ground. The Excalipur.
