how do you get the Atma sword... and where (refresh my memory please) do you get the masamune?

Being wise comes in two parts: 1) having a lot to say and 2) not saying it.

Thanks to Starry Relm and Sphere for the Sig and Avatar (in their respecive order)

In the original FFI, the Masamune was the most powerful weapon, and the Excalibur was the second most powerful. However, a variety of weapons from other titles in the series were added to the DoS version, some of which exceed Masamune in power. Masamune is near the end of the game, on the same level of the Chaos Shrine where you fight Tiamat for the second time. There is no 'Atma sword', although that is a clear reference to the Ultima Weapon. In FFVI, there was a sword called the Atma Weapon that powered up based solely on HP. Atma, however, was a mistranslation, corrected here. The Ultima Weapon can be found at the end of Whisperwind Cove.

The Masamune is in the last dungeon. The Ultima Weapon, or "Atma sword" if you like, is at the end of Whisperwind Cove, the Soul of Chaos dungeon that's near the Ice Cave, in that maze of rivers.

    Edit: Dear Mr. Sixteen Hundred,

I don't know what kind of sick pleasure you get out of consistently posting immediately before I do and thereby negating my very existence, but I must say that it is totally sexy in any case.

    Carry on,

Yes, after beating Omega go through the warp portal and it will be there in a chest before the second warp portal.

By now you should all know I prefer original "English" names and am therefore prejudiced in my posts.

...Please tell me you're joking... How could I have missed that? I killed Omega (he was a real pain in the butt, I had to have three characters healing while my Knight just chipped away at his HP 500 points at a time, but I did it [my team is a Knight, a Ninja, a Red Wizard, and a Black Wizard]), but I didn't see any chest there. I did see a chest between the other boss on that level (I haven't fought it yet, so I'm not sure which one it is) and the warp pad. Is there any chance that that is the chest you mean? I really don't want to fight Omega again, since the Murasame that you get from him is only good for Ninjas, and I only have one Ninja...

Also, where do you get the Ragnarok? I don't seem to have picked that one up yet either...

The Ultima Weapon is found in Whisperwind Cove. Omega is fought in the Lifestream Grotto. That would explain why you didn't see the Ultima Weapon.

Ragnarok is acquired after beating Shinryuu, just as it was in FFV (although the Ragnarok in DoS is statistically based on the Ragnarok in FFVI).

Side note: The boss right before the Ultima Weapon is Doomgaze. He gives you Lightbringer, the Red Mages strongest sword. After him is the warp portal and stuff.
Boy am I an unfunny ass.

    Ah, thank you much.

Out of curiousity, what is the strongest weapon for each class (besides the Ultima Weapon)?

Ultima Weapon has strength equal to the wielder's HP divided by 10. Thus, it can potentially have an attack power of 99, which far exceeds any other weapon in purely statistical strength. Masamune, the original strongest weapon, still follows in second with an attack power of 56. However, like their counterparts in other games, a variety of weapons have additional positive attributes, like free spells or stat bonuses. Ragnarok has an attack power of 55, but I would take it over the Masamune on the basis of its additional attributes. Just as in FFVI, it adds 30 to one's Evasion, and adds bonuses of +7, +3, +7, and +7 to Strength, Agility, Intelligence, and Stamina, respectively. Ragnarok also allows one to repeatedly use Flare. Lightbringer (obviously Illumina from FFVI) has an attack power of 48, but has the incredible additional bonuses of +50 Evasion and +7 for Strength, Agility, Intelligence, and Stamina. Lightbringer also allows repeated use of Holy. Those are my four favorite weapons, although many people like to give Black Wizards the Judgment Staff, which has a +3 Intelligence bonus and repeated Flare use. Murasame, similar to its counterpart in FFIV, has +5 bonuses in Strength and Intelligence. However, it has -5 penalties in Agility and Stamina. Its attack power is 50, and related spell is Protect.

I noted these weapons, as I feel they are the strongest examples, if one's main interest is in dealing damage to the enemy. Ultima Weapon can be equipped on all upgraded classes, Masamune on all classes, Ragnarok on Knights, Lightbringer on Red Wizards, Judgement Staff on Black Wizards, and Murasame on Ninjas. Rune Staff, a White Wizard exclusive weapon, might be a nice choice if healing is a priority; it has a +10 Intelligence bonus and repeated Healara use.

Cool, thanks. Nice info all around. But to use the Flare, Holy, etc, doesn't the weapon have to be in your inventory, not equipped? If that's not the case, how do you use it while you have it equipped?

Also, what do you guys think of the Orichalcum? I found it in a chest in the Lifestream Grotto yesterday. It is my Black Wizard's best weapon so far, with awesome attack, and the ability to drain 1/4 of the damage it does to my Black Wizard's health (although it causes damage to him instead if you attack an undead critter with it. Fortunately, it doesn't heal the undead monster, though).
