Well... it's not like you have to use the option. It's a nice feature for those of us who like to.
Except they shouldn't give the option in games with VAing. Anyone remember the avoidance tragedy and awkward dialogue of FFX? Usually Sqaure's names fit, but an occasionaly change up can be fun, and give the RPG a bit of freshness- a new feel if you will.
As for FFTA, I left the default for my first playthrough, and on subsequent playthroughs I've always named him Phineas.

I left Marche and Nutsy, although I wish I changed Nutsy because everyone left Nutsy so when I played with people there was just Nutsy's everywhere.

Couldn't stand the name Nutsy. That was an instance when the Square-given name SHOULD have been changed. I know it was supposed to be kiddish but.. Nutsy? Not a very imposing name.
