It's funny how the talent needed to reach the top has changed. Years ago, you needed singing skills, playing skills or whatever to reach the top. Yay, Ashlee's talent is that she's related to Jessica Simpson, who also can't sing.

Eh, I don't know if I'd agree with that. The "top" of popular music has
never been full of very many talented people. Granted it took more talent
back before we got all this technology, but not all that much more. Look
    at Sinatra.

Well, I wasn't talking that far back. All you needed back then was money and the right contacts, and people would still listen to it because they had very few other options. Years later they got some company in the music industry and talent became more relevant.

As far as Ashlee goes I like her singing. She has a unique voice and thats not an insult. When she started out she really couldnt sing live but looking at her performances on her second series shes gotten the hang of singing properly. I dont think she took singing that seriously when she started out. I dont care much for her music but her attitude is very irritating. An episode of her show started out with her getting a hair cut, her mother made some comment and the rest of the show was Ashlee whoring about how her mother was a tring to control her life. Christ sake.

When is this time when talent was relevant?

The bands which we see as classics now weren't always extremely
popular. It often happens that there are some very popular songs which
are very bad, and which fade from the public's eye (and/or ear) after a
little while. Then the songs which actually were good, regardless if they
actually got popular or not, are looked back on and seen as classics.

The greatest time for music in the 20th century, in my opinion, would be
between 1965 and 1975 with the peak around 69-72 (with the 30s at a
close second of course), but even in this time persiod, the charts show
tons and tons of horrible songs at the top.
