I've played Final Fantasy 9 like 30 times now and I still can't figure out if there is a way you can make any of the cahracters skill points all go up to 99. Ex.
Zidane

Strength:99
Defense:99
Magic:99
Speed:99
Magic Defense:99
Spirit:99
Evade:99
Magic Evasion:99

I wonder if this is even possible? Has anyone figured out if you can?

No, it isn't possible. However, by equipping certain equipment, you can make it go up very high. You still have to do a bit of 'customization'. I'd take a look at some of the stat customization guides at gamefaqs.com.

Also note that Eiko can potentially get the highest stats since all the stat gains taht you get from the equipment that Marcus wears goes directly to her when she joins the party. Then, you can increase her stats even further.

Characters that join are at a level which is the average of your teams current members when they join. Keeping all of your characters at level 1 until the end when you get the best equipment for stat boosts is best. To find out which equipment, stat changes, and all that junk, go check out some of the faqs, it's a complicated issue, but you cannot max out all the stats to 99.

The maxes are:

Hp: 9999 (by Amarant with Hp+10% and 20%
Mp: 838 (by Eiko with Mp+10% and 20%)

Speed: 50 (by Zidane)
Strength: 99 (by Eiko using the Marcus bug)
Magic: 99 (again by Eiko using the Marcus bug)
Spirit: 50 (by all)
Magic Stones: 81 (yet again by Eiko using the Marcus bug)

^ and that's if you know how equipment affects stat growth. Levelling blindly would most likely result in no one reaching the max for anything.

Basic defense stats come only from equipment. I would have to go through my save to see which combination would give the highest defense stats but I'm guessing it's Steiner with some combination involving the Tin Armor.
