It´s the Holy stone which helps against ghosts.
The man at Winhill gives it to you for helping him(lending a hand) to find the vase pieces(Vases were inspirative art).
It helps against the Tomberry(the greenest of green).

In the case of the man at Winhill, the Artist who created the vase would be the one seeking inspiration, instead of the man who wants to put his vase back together.

You've got the right idea, just a different location, different character, and different green.

Status Guard?

It's the final reward for helping the Artisan. Since it gives you ST-Def x4, it would be handy to prevent the status ailments caused by the Bad Breath attack of the (very green) Malboros.
