Default A girl was arrested for 'plotting to shoot up my school'

A girl in my english class was arrested yesterday because she had, apparently, made threats concerning fellow students and staff. From what I know, she had a death list and may or may not have had a map of the school.

This isnt the problem though. The REAL problem here is that a girl was arrested for craving attention. Yes she was a moron and I never liked her in the first place, but you know what? She wasn't going to shoot up my school and there was absolutely nothing to be afraid of. I think she should have been expelled, but she was ARRESTED.

Also, because of this, we had peddle needless fear en mass to all of the students and thier parents. It's force fed to us as if it was some kind of nasty medicine. (And in a sense, it is) And of course, the average individual will eat it all up. In fact, they are happy to have thier thoughts and emotions spoon fed to them. 'concerned' parents were calling the school all day, and in such large numbers that the staff could not leave the phones for a minute. Of course, the girl had already been arrested, so there was obviously no danger of her shooting anybody, but in the name of drama safety people overlook that little tidbit. There were kids who were talking about how 'freaked out' they were but in reality the danger was so minimal to begin with any 'fear' was not only unwarranted, it was absurd.

The Chandler police department asked the school not to release the name of the student in order to uphold the 'integrity of thier investigation'. The school complied, to a degree... Instead of telling us her name, they narrowed it down enough that any student could figure it out. We were told in a letter by the principal that the suspect was a "17 year old sophomore female." There are very few seventeen year old sophomores at my school, and even less 17 year old female sophomores. Now, had we not been given this information the whole notiong that "Kelly did it" would have, for at least a little while, remained solely as a baseless rumor. However, now everybody knows who did it. We didn't need to know that. No one but higher ups in the administration and the police needed to know that. This, in my opinion, shows that not only does my school have no respect for it's students, it also has no respect for the Chandler police department.

There were cops all over my school today. It's a bit unnecessary, but it's completely understandable. However, there were also undercover cops at my school today. I know that this is nothing new, but undercover police officers have NO BUSINESS In a school setting, and I most certainly do not appreciate them in my school. First of all, the girl was NOT AT SCHOOL! Plus, I think regular cops are enough to deter anyone from pulling out a gun and shooting people. All under cover cops are useful for is to catch people in the act.

In my mind, having under cover cops at any school, for any reason, amounts to lying to the entire student body. It's treacherous, it's deceptive, and it's down right immoral. I personally would have rather risked a school shooting than have the police present at my school.

Now, I am by no means condoning what this moronic little girl did. She should have known that talking about that stuff can get you in a lot of trouble. She is immature and I have never liked her even in the least bit, and quite frankly, in any other situation I would be glad to see her gone. However, what is going on is copletely unnecessary and very little good is coming out of it. What's worse is that this is now standard in situations like this. It's being handled wrong and it's hurting everybody involved in the process. I am sick of being force fed fear when there is no danger. I am just plain sick of the absurdity that is this entire situation.

People do overreact a lot, and one person panicking causes another to, and it's a chain reaction. That does make me angry that your principal told everyone pretty much who she was when they were told not to reveal. The overreactions can be annoying, but I guess in the end it's better safe than sorry. Perhaps the police know more than you were told.

I remember whne ther ewas some undercover cops at my school.Man it was freaking tight they busted two drug lords...MAn one of them pulled up in a chevy man the chevy was boss and they just had them at gun point them boom there was shots. But they got pissed. The undercover cops were made because of those stupid 6th graders outside looking at it and yelling and .MAn they didn't understand the danger they were in.Shots were fired at the cops it could've hit some of those sixth graders but didnt but back on the subject.

This is what gets me.They really weren't cracking down on preventing school shooting s until colubime.Even though they have been happening in inner city schools really 30 years before Colubime even happened.Back then it was jsut and is still just another dead black person or hispanic person.ITs a sad sad world we live in.

Remeber how, back in the day, bomb threats were no big deal? All they did was evacuate the campus. Now it's suddenly some huge deal, as if bomb threats have evolved into something more sinister over the years. It's a joke. (At least, I think so)

As for the police presence in schools, im used to it. I went to two high Schools and the first one i went to had medal detectors you had to go into to get into the building. It always felt like you were being patted down to get into a club. And the second high school i went to had police presence everywhere, im sure there were even undercovers in there too. So, it was really no big deal. im glad the police responded the way they did at your school too. I mean, yeah everything turned out ok, but had it been ignored and she was serious, we could have been looking at another school shooting on the news for the next couple weeks.

man I rmemebr when iw as little and one time i was taking a dump and i looked at the walla nd it said on tuesday at 10:15pm the school is going to blow to hell.I was thinking(can you give me 5 more minutes/).lol

But really I think its people who live in suburban areas who are the most fearful of things...Like if asuburban kids heared gunshots they would run to there houses. If you goto Harlem and hear gunshots.Kids are still outside playing because they have gotten use to it.

but yeah they aren't joking now its sad mainly because im saying this out of the racial tensions in the USA and how its pitiful that schools are doing something about school shooting because a suburban school with a population of mostly caucasin students attending it got shot up but the fact that this has been happening in inner city schools for more than 30 years.Inner city schools thats populated by minority students. The thing aobut it is.Thats sad that they jsut now started cracking down on it since colubime.

    That's not you.

It is unfortunate people overreact. I'd point to 9/11, myself. True, this hyperreaction prevents people like me from, say, stealing someone's car and putting on the roof of our four-story library, you know, things which used to be normal. But, in the words of someone very special, whatyagonnado.

She was arrested for threatening to kill people, not for craving attention. One is a criminal offence, the other is not.

I guess you can never be too careful.

Better to arrest one suspicious looking girl than to have an entire school blown up and children killed.

I go to a private Highschool. No cops.

I agree with you Nik0tine, that situation was not handled as well as it could have been.

I was a Sophomore when Colombine went down. Even before then my school always had a cop on duty and a school "security gaurd" (he wasn't a real cop) there. Even before columbine at all bomb threats the entire school was evacuated and the fire department and police showed up. We would have 9-10 in a two week period, it would die down, then it would start all over again. I agree that many people overreact to your situation but it is because they feel they have to do something and calling the school seems to bet the only thing they can do. Multiple cops and undercover cops is going to far though. All is does is create more drama which people crave because it's different from their normal average day.

Some measures that were taken were justifiable, but much of that situation was blown out of proportions. I would have arrested the girl, if someone is threatening to kill people that is something I think should be taken seriously.

It's interesting to note that the amount of countrywide deaths has actually been in decline over the past years, even when Columbine happened it was still in decline. We fear what we've heard about, and the more personal they make it, the greater the fear is. How many people refused to fly with Arabs after 9/11? And how many planes were actually flown into buildings after 9/11, by Arabs or otherwise? It's foolish, but it's what we humans do. It's much easier to blindly believe and follow something instead of thinking for oneself, especially when our education system specifically discourages such a thing.

You wouldnt happen to live in washingtonville Ny would you?

Washingtonville – The ninth-grader had grown interested in the Columbine High School shootings that left dozens wounded and 15 dead, police said.

The 14-year-old downloaded pictures of the two gunmen – Eric Harris and Dylan Kleibold – off the Internet. Her parents said she had grown fond of violent games, music and videos over the past year, according to the Washingtonville police.

Then last week, the girl threatened to shoot other students at Washingtonville High School on April 20 – the date marking the sixth anniversary of the Columbine shootings, officials said.

She’d drawn pictures depicting a girl in the school hallway with a firearm. She’d created a short “death list” containing the names of students she was angry with, authorities said.

The young girl had asked another student if there was a map of the school available, officials said.
