Default I wonder what would have happened if...

Just for fun, I wanted to see what would happen if the FF8 storyline was changed. Feel free to start new ideas. For istance, I wonder what would happen if Squall, say, hooked up with Selphie insted of Rinoa?

Many, MANY, thanks go out to Sphere for this great sig!

I've written [a rather massive] fic on the subject [not on SquallxSelphie, but slight changes in the storyline]

I'd change the storyline as follows:

    1. Edea and her (SPOILER)possession by Ultimecia would be apparent from nearly the begining of the game.

    2. They didn't all grow up together and forget about it later. That was dumb.

    3. The story would include more screen time for the secondary characters, not just Squall and Rinoa.

    4. The SquallxRinoa relationship would evolve clearly and slowly, not pop up randomly 3/4 of the way through.

    5. Ellone's role and Ulty's motives would be laid out.

Shiva, i agree with all but 2 of those. Number 2 and number 4.

Number 2: Well, it kinda made since in a way. They were fated to meet and know each other some how. And they had clearly stated from teh begining that Extended use of Gardian forces causes memory lose.
I mean, do you remember people from your elementary school(this is assuming that you are at least mid teens-adult in years of age)? If so, how hard is it to remember clear precise things about them. Then add the fact that Junctioning causes memory loss. I guess if i could change anything abou this one, i would make it alittle more clear how bad the memory lose can be.

Also, it didnt say they grew up together, cause clearly not of all them grew up together, it just said that at some point in time, they were all in the orphanage together. Im mean that should be obvious. Zell was adopted by Ma Dintch, Selphie was in trabia, Irvine was in Galbadia.

Number 4: The SquallxRinoa relationship happened just like most teenage relationships happen, 3/4 of the way into it. They fall in love quickly because thats how teenagers do it. How many teenage relationships do you know grow and evolve slowly?

I agree with you that the fact that they all grew up together is important in regards to "fate" thing, so let me clarify. What I take issue is the plothole that they all COMPLETELY forgot their entire childhoods except for Irvine, who chooses not to say anything until 3/4 of the way through the game. Yes, it makes some kind of sense, but the memory loss is a forced plot point so that we as gamers can be surprised that they were together later in the game (like the whole Ulty thing). I mean, yes, they were young, but they weren't random classmates that could be forgotten. They LIVED together. It would be akin to forgetting your siblings, or at least your close friends as children. I mean, I don't remember everyone in my kindergarten class, but I certainly remember the 5 girls I was best friends with, despite the fact I havn't seen them for years.

Also, when I visualize remaking this, I see it in my head as more of a movie, in which there would be plenty of plot unraveling that could occur without hiding the fact that they were all orphans together. Therefore, they'd all be at the same orphanage as kids, but they would have some recollection of it prior - perhaps some kind of dreams or flashbacks of the other kids, like when Squall remembers being alone in the rain. As a writer, there's somewhat of a rule that you have to introduce an idea (ie. that they may have grown up together) with hints early on. It can't come out of nowhere. I mean, they don't even say that GFs cause memory loss until this point! LOL.

Number 4: The SquallxRinoa relationship happened just like most teenage relationships happen, 3/4 of the way into it. They fall in love quickly because thats how teenagers do it. How many teenage relationships do you know grow and evolve slowly?
Haha - that's true. However, since we play as the inside of Squall's head, as his character, we should have had some clue that he was more intrigued by Rinoa than he seemed. I've explained this in other threads, but I'll sumerize: I think that physically (meaning what actually happens onscreen between the couple, how they interact, what they say, etc) the game is very realistic in their character development. HOWEVER, since the game does provide us with their inner thoughts as well, it failed on progressing their emotional relationship more slowly. How each felt towards each other to themselves, even if they didn't express it. Rinoa was slightly better at this, but Squall needed some more of an inner dialogue with himself about it to make the leap from "go away, you annoy me" to "I want to hear her voice! I'm ready to die for her, ahhhh!"

When Rinoa collapses at the end of disc 2 Squall thinks to himself, "problem solved". The End.

I'd really want them to go into more detail about Rinoa and Seifer's relationship. They could've done a lot with that, but instead chose for it to not go anywhere. It was clear that they both felt something for each other and it would've been nice to maybe see some kind of flashback at the very least. I guess that's just another one of FFVIII's under developed plots. I'd also want the other characters to have more of the spotlight. They focused too much on Squall and Rinoa when they had quite a few other great characters that they could've done quite a bit with. Don't get me wrong though, I loved FFVIII, I just would've liked for it to have some other more developed plots.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I wonder would've happened if Squall and Quistis were the main pairing and then Rinoa ended up with Seifer?

Zell and Seifer should have hooked up.
And Rinoa should have died and Squall should have banged Quistis.

As for shiva blizzard's number two, well, it has to happen sometime to occur often enough to be cliche:P

although now that I think about it, I can't think of anything off the top of my head that relies on that plottwister-_-

Well...see, i dont know if your a guy or girl, but if your a girl, i'll assume you just dont know this. But, guys dont even know their in love until its too late. our inner dialouge doesnt even help ourselves out. Men are pretty much going at it blind folded on the inside. Go Squall!
